So I heard from a source of mine (working on RSO units) that the Riverside County Sheriff's Office did a trade in with Motorola, and every radio must go, as they're switching entirely over to APX8500 and NEXT radios. Anyone have any other info on that?

Doesn't change the fact that they're running the Capital E. Glad I don't live in the CV where my scanner wouldn't work.

They could have a Dispatch and Tac for each station (I think they have two dispatch channels per station, actually) and then methodically program so the deputy need to make one click to the right. Plus they're not even using radios for names, last I checked.

Yes there is still existing XTS and XTL that is in the counties fleet for sure. Swapping out XTS and XTL's as they fail or go thru their quarterly cycles of swap outs as a continue effort to get everyone onto at least an APX and The new N family moving forward.

The reason the backend is all Phase II TDMA is that they are ready when the front end in time is ready to cutover. They stay on the front end FDMA so they can use their existing fleet of XTS and XTL's but also use their APX that are forward and backwards compatible all the way back to I think Motorola TYPE I SmartNet and Tyoe II SmartZone systems for sure. Still use connect tones and no ASTRO 25 Channel ID"s.

It's a money and a grant issue with big counties and citities. Go ask for 50K radios that are Quad Bank NEXT at 15K a pop or whatever and I mean I am pretty close in money wise. You will get shot down real quick asking for 15K a pop at 50K pieces needed. You slowly over a period of 5 to 10 years keep trading in the old for new. It's an on-going part of a techs job yearly on swap outs. Go ask for 750 million and see what happens. HAHA. Truth though. Maybe do 2K mobiles or portables yearly. That's how the cycle goes.

When I worked there, we were still on EDACS with M-RKs, P7100, Orions, M7100s and LPE200s. They were just starting to asset engrave the APX7000s and install 7500s into the Crown Vics. We had early APX CPS 3.0. Ahh memories!

I remember the EDACS system. Wish I could go back in time and monitor the iCalls. Today I just have memories of some beat numbers.

I thought those square mikes on the shirts were cool.

I remember the old GE ("We bring good things to light") theme tones on the old system. I didn't have a trunk-capable scanner back then. :)

I remember them putting a set of ascending tones following every transmission on their first trunking system. These kept your non-trunking scanner (there weren't any trunking in 1992 when I first heard them) from moving on to another frequency at the site. You had to keep your finger on the scan button to get the scanner to move on in an attempt to understand a conversation. I don't remember when this trunking system was installed, but it shows that Riverside County has been anti-scanner for 3+ decades now.
