KUSA – The mix of rain and snow will continue through Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning, but the sun should peak through the clouds again by Wednesday afternoon.

Heavy snow has already fallen in the mountain and foothills to the west of Denver with over a foot of new snow in the Evergreen area.

Heavy snow and blinding wind is also occurring in the higher elevations of Arapahoe, Douglas and Elbert counties with many locations in Douglas County reporting over 8 inches of snow by mid-morning on Tuesday.

The mix will turn into mostly snow during the Tuesday evening commute. However, there should not be much accumulation on roads because of warm ground temperatures.

Chief 9NEWS Meteorologist Kathy Sabine says the metro area will see 1 to 3 inches of snow mainly on grassy areas by Wednesday morning, but southern and southwestern suburbs could get more snow.

The rain and snow will move out by noon Wednesday and the sun should start to peak through the clouds early Wednesday afternoon.

A WINTER STORM WARNING is in effect for the Front Range Mountains and foothills above 6,000 feet for up to 2 feet of total snowfall by Wednesday morning.

A WINTER STORM WARNING is in effect for the southern metro area above 5,500 feet for 3 to 6 inches of wet snow with blinding winds.

A WINTER STORM WARNING is in effect for all areas around Monument Hill above 6,000 feet for 8 to 16 inches total snowfall by Wednesday morning. This includes most of Douglas and Elbert Counties.

A WINTER STORM WARNING is in effect for the Pike's Peak area and Teller County for up to 2 feet of new snowfall by Wednesday morning.

The snowy and rainy conditions made for difficult driving across much of Colorado and forced several major roads to shut down.

The American Red Cross was forced to activate a shelter for stranded travelers at Douglas County High School in Castle Rock because southbound I-25 was closed at Lincoln Avenue because of icy conditions.

The highway reopened around 8 p.m.

A bus load of 17 students was among those forced into the shelter.

Governor Ritter activated the Colorado National Guard to help with the recovery of three buses and dozens of other motorists stranded in eastern El Paso County.

National Guard troops mobilized out of Fort Carson in two specialized Snowcats and two military SUVs. Two school buses, one with 30 children and another with 15 children, and a third bus with 11 senior citizens, were reported stranded along an ice-covered Highway 94 near the town of Yoder. As many as 70 passenger vehicles were also caught in the storm.

The state has activated the Emergency Operations Center and is providing help to El Paso County.

In Denver, high water on 6th Avenue has forced the ramp from northbound I-25 onto westbound 6th Avenue to close.

Highway 86 was closed between I-70 and Highway 83 in Elbert County because of poor weather conditions.

Traffic in Clear Creek County started moving again on westbound I-70 at Georgetown on Tuesday afternoon after falling rocks and multiple accidents were cleared from the icy and snowpacked roads.

"It's snowing pretty hard the roads are going from slush to slick," said Ken Nelson with the Colorado State Patrol. "The vehicle behind me lost control just east of the Eisenhower Tunnel, spun out perpendicular in the highway (and) a semi came around the corner had nowhere to go collided in the side of the vehicle."

The following areas also have chain laws in effect:
-Silver Plume | Loveland Pass both directions
-Summit | Eisenhower Tunnel
- Empire | Berthoud Pass

Eastbound I-70 east of the Eisenhower Tunnel was due to a jackknifed semi.

US 40 Berthoud Pass was to remain closed overnight.

US 6 Loveland Pass was to remain closed overnight.

State Highway 83 was closed from Franktown to Colorado Springs due to adverse conditions (opening dependent upon weather conditions).

US 24 was closed from Colorado Springs to Limon is closed due to low visibility (opening dependent upon weather conditions).

State Highway 86 was closed from Franktown to Kiowa (opening dependent upon weather conditions).

State Highway 94 was closed from Colorado Springs to Punkin Center (opening dependent upon weather conditions).

Four busloads of students were stranded along Highway 94 in eastern El Paso County and had to be rescued by the national guard, the governor said Tuesday.

Colorado National Guard troops and local emergency crews rescued the school buses when they became stranded along Highway 94 in eastern El Paso County at about 3030 p.m. because of the storm.

The 62 students from elementary through high schools were safely sheltered in private homes in the area, where they were expected to remain until Wednesday morning.

Another 115 people are in shelters in El Paso County, the governor's office said.

El Paso County sheriff's officials, El Paso Search and Rescue teams and Colorado National Guard troops estimate another 30 vehicles are still stranded near the town of Yoder. But many of those motorists are beginning to resume travel on their own as extreme weather conditions diminish.

There are no known injuries from the storm.
