Rookie Request

I'd like to get started with a handheld scanner (I need the portability for my job AOR). I would like to be able to get Police, Sheriff, Fire/EMS, and Railroad freq's, but am lost as to range and abilities of the various equipment. Don't have a big budget and have seen tons of stuff on EBay, etc. Can someone offer recommendations on a decent starter and the best buying strategy? Thanks.

You're living in Michigan, so I think you're going to want to save up some money and wait until you can get a digital scanner. New, they run $450 - $500. You can find some older, yet still very capable, PRO-96, and PRO-2096 digital scanners as low as $225 - $250.
