Just the name of the yard. Not local to SLC so I can only speculate but it could be named after someone at the railroad or a landmark or it could have some sort of historical significance.
All locations from the railroad have different awkward names all throughout the state and probably the country. The railroad has its own milepost and its own names, maxwell, guiluly, Martin, wash, colton, mounds, etc.
Just to the east of Grainger and Greybar, on 900 West, you'll see a massive paved lot filled with parked cars. These are brand new vehicles being transferred from train to auto carrier trucks. Then they go to the dealerships. That massive parking lot is Roper Yard.
