He was making you confused because he had no idea

what you were asking. AND THAT'S NOT YOUR FAULT. Just had to shout that out so I wouldn't be misunderstood. As someone earlier mentioned, all those sales people know now are cell phones and computers. Before most of you were born, back in the 60's, you could go to Radio Shack and buy everything you needed to build you own radio/transmitter and the sales guys knew what you needed. But that's a long time ago. Scanners in one store does not pay their rent/lease. They just don't sale many, thus the sales people are knowledgable (I use that word very loosely) in regards to cells and puters.

Every once in a while, you get a memo from corporate that says to update your copy of Scancat - with instructions on how to download scanner programming for your area. Then, when some smarter-than-average RS associate tries it, it causes more harm than good, the customer gets frustrated and returns the scanner.
My local manager ask me about what software I use, due to problems with Scancat. I told him they are now using it and are including pages printed from RR with the sale. On a interesting note the Scanner section went from a 4 foot square area to a couple of sections in the store, haven't seen that in quite awhile. When I made a comment about carrying more inventory on the shelves he stated " We got more on the way". Its about time they will finally have something in stock for a change, its a step in the right direction.

As with any product sold by any company, there are those behind the counter that THINK they know how the item works and there are those that KNOW how the item works.

When a scanner is purchased in the the store I work in, it has been reprogramed with almost everything needed to listen to Police, Fire, Airplanes, Railroad, Media, and Storm Spotters for my area. I also provide customers with information about Radio Reference and the various programs available for programing the radio.

Finding a local ELMER/SME on scanning like you did is the best way to get the correct information to enjoy the hobby.

Years ago as a high school student, I worked at RS, this was way back in the day, when everything was written to an order pad, we asked for your name and address and eventually you'd get our catalog. Anyway, the point I was making is that even back then we had thousands of items in stock. It's kind of hard to be an expert on every single item in your store.

And lets not forget that employee turn over time is fairly high at RS as well. So the next time you think the RS sales clerk is a moronic twit, just take a look around the store and see how many items you could be an "expert" at and sell with knowledge. I'm willing to bet you'd specialize in learning just a few areas and not thousands of stock and online items.

Most reps are knowledgeble in the products that are sold most, but I wonder really how many scanners a single RS store sells in a weeks time, compared to cell phones, computers, stereos and etc.

Thank You! Coming from a RS Salesmen, that still don't know 100% about every little item that is sold at our store. In time, sure you will learn a lot of tricks about different things, but never everything about everything there.
