like I mentioned the panels I have all work fine (tested with external power source) but once installed in a certain 2006 I got it wont work.

Same panel that didnt work on 2006 #1, installed in a different 2006 #2 works fine.

The solder point that the person does on youtube due to the trace cut, is not enough juice for the panel to power ON properly, I just tried that and panels lights up but not bright at all.

Its OK I have used this scanner for a while with no light hehe

I
Missunderstood!..... There is a video on someone who used the voltage for the display and added 2 LEDs above the panel and it lit it up pretty well!

Recently purchased another 2006 with OEM panel and looks a bit dim, so ordered some panels this week from china, look very similar to originals. Likely will have to trim them a bit.. ordered 2 for $8.96 shipped

Linky??? would be nice to have for the future....

Let me get them first and test them, if they are good then I will link it. Don't want to link something that will be crap lol.

But these do look like the OEM ones, I will post a picture next to the real to compare sizes.

Will be removing it from a 2006 I purchased last week for $20.00 and its very clean and most of all the buttons are all white.

my order was held at customs and sent back so getting a refund.
Did manage to order today for 99¢ free shipping for the grand total of $1.40.
Ice blue color. Ordered 3 separate orders to get the same 99¢ price on each.

$4.20 with tax and shipping for (3) Ice Blue panels is good enough for me.
You can see the name of the store where it was purchased from.

On the Pro-2004 you can make your newly replaced EL panel last eons longer by doing the "Dimmer switch to on/off switch mod". I have done this mode and it is very simple & requires no soldering or parts. You only need to clip a diode.
I am posting it, as taken from Bill Cheeks' Scanner Modification Handbook vol 1. and in his own words.

"If you want off", the mod isn't difficult.
The dimmer switch (SW702) is mounted to the LCD PC board (PC-4). Two resistors are mounted next to the dimmer switch, R702 (100 Ohms) and R703 (10 Ohms).
R703 is near the board edge and it controls the bright setting.
R702 controls the dim setting and if you remove it you will have two options - bright and off."
The only thing I would add is, you have to remove the 5 screws from the display board & flip it over, this is a simple removal & no wires need to be disconnected though. Also there is no need to completely remove the front sloping faceplate from the scanner. Just remove the 2 top screws & the face plate can be tilted forward allowing plenty of room to work."

I just checked Scamazon and they have copies << Scanner Modification Handbook >> << Scanner Modification Handbook Volume 2 >>.
There are actually three of those books - but the third one is a little more general in application. Look for "The Ultimate Scanner."
I have all three - took them in a couple of whiles ago, had the original binding cut off, and had then spiral bound. Now they lay flat, fold back and are just easier to work with on the bench. Cost? I think it's about five bucks a book, now. Or have them bound all together, probably cost you about ten, all up. It's up to you.

dam! dont you know you cant pick anything up on these"old junky analog scanner" or so digital radio users keep telling me ... you should send it to me :)
Air band, of course! I live a few miles down the road from a major airport (SJC) and between a couple of muni fields (Amelia Reid and Palo Alto Muni,) and I like listening to pilot chatter. The SDS100 is for listening to public safety, with digital, P25, Motorola PhI/II, that sort of thing.

The old analogs still have their place - the air band will probably never be digitised. The FAA drags its feet too much on equipment certifications - the engines that are type-certified for use in G/A were obsolete before the first production crankcase came out of the mould. And new engines still follow the patterns of the old engines - so they are, of course, obsolescent as well.

I doubt they're going to upgrade the radios anytime soon. Now to just get the unenforceable (and now useless) ECPA86/ECPA90 repealed...

I have them as well. Bill was a genius!

Someone a while back mentioned that they found them on pdf. I wish that I could find them, because I would hate to cut mine apart to make digital copies.

edit: Sorry, I just realized that I'm hijacking this thread...

A digital type-accepted aero radio? I stand corrected. But it having only three freqs in it show just how much use it's getting...

I plan on scanning mine eventually, and I don't have to tear them apart to make digital copies. How soon did you want them, is this just a "whenever" thing?

Thank you!

Well, I'm 64 now and retired. I'm thinking that sometime between now and when I'm 80, would be great! I really appreciate the offer! (I guess you can tell I'm not in any rush :) )

Hey - I'm 52, semi-retired, and a student (I've always wanted to finish my degree...) I'll dig up my flatbed scanner one of these days and get at it - the advantage is that my copies, as I said, are all spiral bound...

I got all 3 of them in the early to mid '90s as they came out also. I have had my Pro-2004 since 1988 and modded it pretty hard in the 90's with Bill's books. I have even did a mod that Bill didn't have which is the keypad for his 400 channel mod and this really makes a '2004 really nice. I printed it out, then laminated it and glued it on. I still have the keypad file and can share it if anyone wants it. ... I still use my '2004 often and about 3 yrs ago I did maintenance on it of spraying the vol & squ pots, changing the backlight again and finally modding the dimmer switch to be an on/off switch.

Send me a copy, I'll put it up on my Google Drive for my radio comms, and it can be shared there once I get it all set up. I'll post a link to the drive once I set things up. USAFSparks at gmail dot com.
