RSS / CPS HT 1000 Issue

Greetings -

I just purchased a decommissioned lot of of 10 Grand Trunk HT1000 VHF units and I'm having some issues programing them. I had planed on turning them into HAM units.

I have a VALID / LEGAL copy of the RSS, just to prevent any hast or questions.

I had to recover the software from my archive and in the process I had to install on a "new" laptop. My problem is that the RSS will no longer read the unit(s). I am running the software on a Panasonic toughbook CF-29, the oldest and slowest PC I have.

The software loads / runs like in the past, however, like I said will not read the unit. I am using a aftermarket cable (that had worked with my previous HT units).

Any ideas ? I'm thinking something with the COM connection or speed of the computer ?

CP29 is probably too fast. You also need true DOS not a DOS box to program the radios. Also RSS needs a true COM port not a USB

Thank you, and that's kinda what I thought. My old programing PC was a gateway 2000 (really old) ... Also, my CF-29 has a true comm port. But I also tried the USB ports and as noted they suck ...

I wonder if I create a new partition and do a DOS 6.2 ... I wonder do you think that would work ? I would have to scrape up the old floppies for the software ...

Unless anyone has a way or other ideas ? I know there's a program called MOSLOW that bogs the processor down for newer PC's but ...

Yes you will need a REAL DOS. The later version of the HT1000 RSS will run on a Pentium processor.

Moslow probably won't work. No USB as this is a DOS program and needs a direct serial port. Turn off the FIFO may help.

You don't need to reload if you have access to DOS 6.22 disks. Make a bootable USB stick.

I have created DOS USB drives. Set your computer to boot to the USB drive first, then the HDD drive second. If the USB drive is installed, it will boot to DOS. If the USB is not installed, it will boot to the hard drive. I am in a shop and this is working perfectly on about 10 different laptops.

There is a FIFO program I put on the USB stick because the computer was a little too fast and it works great, even on newer (4 year old) computers. Programs HT1000's perfectly.

edit: USB stick must be under 2GB to work

On a Dell laptop it used to have dual boot, Win XP or DOS. Now when DOS is selected just a blank screen. I think some of the files to run DOS are missing.

I will explore the USB boot also, but need to know what goes on the 'stick'?

Several years ago when my old DOS coumpter died, (HDD lived), I tryed do the USB DOS and found that you not only had to do a complete DOS install on it, but you had to do the program full install as well in order to get most of the programs to work.

I then started to use DOSBOX and I but a directory on c: called DOD PROGRAMS, and loaded all the DOS programs there.

I then build desktop icons for the DOS programs that when the program is selected, it automatically opens in a DOS window and all programs run great.

I am now using a PENT 2 @2g with 2g ram and still am able to run ALL DOS programs with you trouble. You can even use your usb port, but it MUST be set to com 2, as dos does not see more then 2 ports.
