I have a 796D & 396T. I tried to set-up the SAME weather alert this week. I live in Carbon County, PA and we had some tornado warnings, strong thunderstorms, heavy rain, etc. I went to http://www.nws.noaa.gov/nwr/indexnw.htm#sametable website and confirmed that I inputted the correct codes; however I never received any alerts. Please note that I programmed transmitter codes from the 162.400 which is out of Allentown (this frequency is always strong) and I used several SAME #’s. What am I doing wrong? Please help!

Weather Alert Priority Contents
Turning the Weather Alert Priority feature on allows the scanner to check the weather channels every 5 seconds for a 1050 Hz weather alert signal and still scan or search. If you should receive an alert, you will hear a loud warbling then the weather channel audio. Press Scan to exit.
To turn on Weather Alert Priority, press Hold to hold on any channel.
Press and hold Func then 2/(WX).
At 'WX Operation' scroll to 'WX Alt Priority' and press E/Yes.
Scroll to On and press E/Yes.
Press Scan to exit.
Note: You will see WX in the display when Weather Alert Priority is on.

Ignore what sfdf posted, it has nothing to do with SAME codes.

1) Do you receive the weather signal normally?

2) Did you put the scanner into SAME mode (i.e. not scanning)?

The 396 has a few deficiencies in the SAME functionality on the 396T - especially if you program in different zones to monitor, but the is a workaround.

If your location where you live receives more than 1 WX station, here's where I see the problems. In my area, I receive 5-7 WX stations depending on band conditions. Also not all stations transmit the SAME codes for my county or the area I need to monitor.

I have all 5 rows of SAME codes programmed into the 396T, depending on where I want to monitor SAME alerts. The far North stations do not broadcast far south SAME codes.

Here's an example
SAME 1: Lake Co ONLY CH5 018089 --- --- --- --- --- --- ---
SAME 2: ChiWideIL/IN CH4 017197 017093 018089 017089 017031 017091 018111 018127
SAME 3: Wil-Kk-Lk-Nw CH7 018089 017091 018111 017197 --- --- --- ---
SAME 4: All IN Cntys CH5 018089 018111 018149 018073 018091 018127 018131 ---
SAME 5: Will-So.Lake CH7 018089 017197 --- --- --- --- --- ---

Notice In SAME 1 I have it labeled "Lake Co ONLY CH5". Once I go into SAME alert mode, I select SAME 1 I want to monitor, HOWEVER YOU MUST HOLD ON WX CH 5. Once you select the SAME group you want to monitor and press the top knob, the scanner starts on WX CH1 (in scan mode). I need to monitor WX CH5, not WX CH1, but WX CH1 is active, causing the scanner to stop on WX CH1 and monitors other SAME codes for areas way out of my area.

The Key here is that you must know what SAME codes are being transmitted from each specific WX station, and then you must LOCK down the WX station ONLY on that WX station. The 396T's problem is that each SAME group of codes you enter is NOT associated to a specific WX channel (WX 1-7) - you must press the hold button after chooseing what SAME group you'll be monitoring and rotate the top know to the correct WX station.

You'll notice all my alpha tags contain a CH# (i.e. CH5, CH4, CH7). When I scroll to the SAME group I want to monitor, the Alpha Tag tells me what WX channel I need to HOLD on.

Does this make sense? I've been programming my 396T this way, and have not missed a WX alert yet.

On a side note, I've noticed when monitoring a SAME group, and the WX signal drops below the level that the 396T can decode the digital SAME codes being transmitted, the scanner responds to the 1050hz tone.

1st This is very helpful. How would you know if the SAME alert codes are being transmitted from the WX station? Does the NOAA website have this information listed anywhere?

2nd What does the WX Alt Priority do when it is turned on? If I am scanning I have a small WX in the lower right hand corner of the display. I thought that this would allow me to scan and receive SAME weather alerts, if any were being transmitted. However, what you are describing above is scanning for SAME alerts only. Please note that I did not try this approach.

Thank you for all your feedback! I believe I am a novice at scanning but I love it!

On the noaa website, they list the SAME code, and what frequency it's being broadcast on.

When the WX Alt Pri is turned on, it just scans the 7 WX channels, and listens for the 1050hz tone. No SAME messages when using WX Pri, just a general warning.

When using SAME alert mode, that's the ONLY thing the scanner will do - just continiuosly monitor the WX for a SAME code

Whats neat about the SAME feature, is the display will show "Tornado Watch" or Tornado Warning" and many other messages when an alert comes through.

Here's all the info you'll need http://www.nws.noaa.gov/nwr/indexnw.htm

Just to be clear. When in the WX Alt Pri mode it will interrupt the normal scanner mode and give a SAME warning without the warning messages?

Assuming I have everything working correctly. How often would NOAA send a SAME alert for let’s say a thunderstorm, etc? Are the alerts sent once per hour, etc?

Thanks for all your help.

1) No. It will give a weather warning (not SAME) without the warning message.

2) Once, when the warning is issued.
