I've never heard of anyone having problems with it. I believe it is against the law to have a scanner in some of the countries that the ship goes to, though. Just keep the scanner in your room or something and don't carry it around. If you have ever been on one, you will notice that there is no time to listen to a scanner as its a blast to go on a cruise. If you bring it, it will likely be unused :)

I never travel without a scanner especially on a cruise. There is a lot to listen to on the ships themselves. The 396's close call is great for this type of thing.

I usually take an AOR-8000 with me when I go out of country. It has all modes (except digital) all frequencys. Local am and FM brodcast can be interesting.

Take a scanner with you, If you do a little research you could load up a scanner with the ships freqs, local pd's at each port, do a little work now and it will really pay off durring your trip.

Now I feel like going on a cruise just for the monitoring!
Getting away from this stinking cold wouldn't hurt either.

I have to agree with you on this. I've taken a scanner with me on cruises and places like Disney World and have not used them very much. Although at Disney I was the only one in the area that knew why the parade was late getting started. :D

I found the cruise staff rarely use English. Passengers with FRMS working out times to hit the buffet became boring rather quickly. Just the same, if you have the room in your bag, what the heck. And yes, I would not bring it in to other countries. Leave it on the ship.

I also took my handheld GPS and tracked the ship's progress. I found that the captain would some times take an S shape path from one destination to another, I guess to kill time between port docking slots.

I have taken my Pro 95 with me numerous times on a cruise ship with never a problem. Since different states and different countries have various laws I put the scanner in my checked luggage. I never take the scanner on deck and only listen from my balcony. There is always a lot of traffic when you are in a port. I usually start with this site http://www.dxzone.com/cgi-bin/dir/jump2.cgi?ID=11277 when getting ready for a cruise. - Got another one coming up in March

I think my wife would GLADLY chuck it overboard. I would hate to lose my 96 that way :(
You might be surprised. My wife who normally gives me the "I will kill you" look if I listen to my scanner without headphones has no problem with it on a ship - she actually asks me to turn it up. Must be the salt air and easy access to alcohol.

Ryan,

We took a cruise out of Miami on Royal Caribbean about a year and a half
ago. I didn't take to scanner along....just as well, was too busy doing other
things.

One thing to listen up for on the PA while you're on board. If you hear
them announce "BRAVO, BRAVO, BRAVO" on the PA, that's their "secret
code" for a fire....not a good thing to have on a ship!!

I just returned form a cruise. The GPS was a lot of fun, excpet it highlighted just how slow the boat was going. I left my in my cabin window which worked ok going south bit not so great returning. I had some pretty interesting tracks and fun watching how closely they follow almost the same path within the ocean. It was also interesting seeing how long before we'd arrive in each port of call based on our soeed and the waypoints I marked in advance.

I did not take a radio. I had enough to pack and there really would not have been much time to use it. I did note the 25+ interesting antenna on the upermost deck and checked each one out from the running track. I also noticed that some of what I overheard on crew radios was NOT english at all. I also saw a ton of little Motorola radios people were using to get to and from the pool and dinner...but even many of them did not speak english anyway.

If I recall "Oscar, Oscar, Oscar" is man overboard..... During the last leg of a cruise returning to Miami, we noticed a small boat heading north from Cuba towards the Florida coast... After we passed, the ship started turning and the Oscar announcement came over the PA...

I had my 396 with me so I turned on Close Call and found the captain talking to a resuce boat that was launched to investigate. In the mean time, they forced us off of the outside deck -- turns out they were concerned about people on the boat having weapons (no, they weren't pirates in this case). The people on the boat claimed the boat was taking on water. Our ship's rescue boat took 11 people off of the small boat which, as you may have guessed, was a refugee boat from Cuba. Later that night while were at dinner, the Coast Guard arrived to take them off of the ship.

I was standing in a small enclosed area on the ship looking out the window and a large crowd gathered to listen to my scanner....
