Fellow scanner enthusiasts,

I just found out that I’ll be taking an unscheduled trip to the Tampa / Orlando area for two weeks, beginning 24-Jun. I will not have time to prepare a file for my Uniden 296D, Pro-96 or Pro-92, but I would like to take advantage of the considerable radio traffic which is present in this area. I have absolutely no intimate knowledge of what to listen to in this area but do understand from my limited research thus far that the FL Highway Patrol seem to be undergoing major changes in their radio system. Additionally, I also understand that FL has some interesting laws regarding the use of scanners, which I'd enjoy learning more about before my trip. I’ll be leaving from Baltimore and flying to Orlando, then driving to Englewood, which I understand is about 60 miles south of Tampa. I’d also like to take a few hours while I'm there to visit the Busch Gardens family of Parks (Sea World, Busch Gardens Tampa, etc.) as well as some of the Disney parks. My family will be accompanying me. I have the following programming software available:

ARC250Pro
Win96
Win92
Winxx converter
E-Scanner software which came with the BC296D

So, I appealed to you, my scanning friends to the south. If you have any customized files that you could email me, I’d be so pleased to accept them. Feel free to PM me and I’ll be more than happy to send you my email address. Thank you so very much in advance.

The Florida law for scanners is easy:

If it's a mobile unit that you connect to the cars power or exterior antenna it is a requirement that you have an Amateur Radio license.

If it's a handheld and not connected to the car for power the license is not required.

A portable on your belt there is no licensing requirements.

Hope this simple explanation works.

Hello,
rmiles

Orland/Orange County is digital. I think Englewood might be 800mhz. Tampa not sure if they are digital or analog. Here is the site for Charlotte County and Orlando area and Tampa.

Charlotte County/Englewood

Orange County/Orlando

Tampa area
http://www.radioreference.com/modules.php?name=RR&ctid=344

Sarasota County/Englewood
http://www.radioreference.com/modules.php?name=RR&ctid=373

hope that works. Hope you enjoy your stay in Florida it is very hot down there and I lived in Port Charlotte 4 years ago and it was 95 degress at 5am.

Actually:

Orange County/Orlando is currently 100% Analog but soon that will change to Analog and APCO-25 Digital (I believe it's going to be for Law Enforcement and possibly Fire/EMS as well).

Hillsborough County is mixed Analog (Fire/EMS/some Law Enforcement/Public Works) and ProVoice Digital (most Law Enforcement)

Sarasota County is mostly APCO-25 Digital (almost all Fire and Law Enforcement).

Charlotte County is 100% Analog

Tampa is still 450 MHz analog. I was in Clearwater last month and was able to hear them just fine across the bay.

I made a day trip to Orlando, and loaded the Orlando area to the 96, but I don't think (dumb I know) saved it. I did check out the Disney World freqs and most of the action has moved to the Nextel system. :(

Thanks for all the information thus far. Actually, I was looking for some .mem or .96 files which some of you may already be using that I could just load into my radio. James, Do you have files on your computer for your Pro 95, 96 and 796 which you could email me? I did review the data listed in the RR DB, but don't really have time to prepare a file myself as I have to work all week from 0600 to 2100. Thanks in advance!
