I apologize if I'm in the wrong area. I'm interested in picking up a scanner that I can use on Oahu. I will be here for 2 years from the Big Island, so it would be nice if it would work there when I go back.

I checked on a Scanner Master link that told me no scanners work here... Is that true? Or don't they keep updated with this state?

What would be the best scanner to pick up? I'd appreciate any help. I haven't had a scanner since my Pro 92.

Thanks again.

Scanners definitely work there! Your best bet would be a digital trunking scanner of some sort as the progression on the island is towards P25 trunking. You will not, unfortunately, be able to monitor Honolulu Fire or Police as they are on an EDACS system utilizing ProVoice.

Oahu Scanner

colby4601 is right. I live on Oahu and I have a BCD396T handheld which can pick up and decode digital trunked signals.

If all you want to listen to is the aircraft band, Family Radios, the ambulance dispatch/call, and other analog frequencies then your fine with an analog non-trunked scanner.

Otherwise if you want to listen to anything federal (APCO25), Honolulu City and county (The bus, Ocean Safety), any other digital signals (taxi, airport, hotels). Then you have to spend at least $400. I bought mine used on ebay for $280.

It really sucks that we can't listen in on any police or fire as they use the Provoice proprietary system.

The only police you can hear are all military on Schofield, Wheeler, kaneohe, shafter, NCTAMS, Kalaeloa, and Fort Derussy. And for that you need a digital trunking scanner.
