Hi,
I tried looking through the forum, and I found a few answers, but not to my main question. Is there a database or a map that shows what the basica scanner laws are for each state in the U.S. I am looking for a quick graphical representation of what can and cannot be done with a scanner, such as using it in a vehicle.

Maybe there are only a few states that don't allow scanners in vehicles. I'm pretty sure there are no states that ban scanners, correct?

Thanks.

Scroll down on the main page, you'll see the state forums. You should be able to get a quicker response from those in your state.

Mostly I ask, because if I was traveling state by state, instead of asking 5-10 different questions, instead I would be able to look very quickly and see what states had restrictions on scanners and which do not.

Something that they could easily put on the Wiki portion of this site.

Once again I must remind you that county and municipal ordanences may ban scanners so DO NOT rely solely on state information.

FYI New Jersey has a new anti cell phone law that as worded bans the use of "all electronic communications devices" except Amateur Radio while the vehicle is in motion. It's aimed at text messaging devices but the wording is typical Weird New Jersey. We had to battle the legislature to exempt ham radios but still technically even the police have to pull over to use the radio, believe it or not.

Oh I hope they don't sue me for the parody of the magazine's copyrighted name. (;->) Maybe they'll be nice to me if I give them a plug, if it's not on your news stand you can find it on the Web, it's great weird reading.

D.C. passed the "Distracted Driver" law several years back. While this is mostly aimed at cell phones, it can be used for ANYTHING distracting... cell phone, eating, applying makeup, fiddling with the radio. Before this law, there was "Failure to Give Full Time and Attention", but that was a "secondary" charge and was normally issued in relation to something else like an accident. With the distracted driver law, it is a primary reason for a stop, and therefore, a stop can be made just for observing the distraction. Written into the law is the authorization for police use of cell phone while driving while on official business only. As for scanners, they are legal, just don't be distracted while using one while driving.
