I'm looking for an inexpensive scanner capable of monitoring an LTR trunked system BUT my wish list includes the ability to decode MDC-1200. Would prefer new but am not opposed to used. Any ideas?

Must Have:
Ability to monitor LTR Trunked system. BCT15X is what I'm down to BUT would like the ability to decode MDC-1200.

Would like to have:
Ability to decode MDC-1200.
Base or mobile format. (Will settle for handheld) BCD996P2 looks to be the least expensive in the Uniden line that does this. Am I missing something? I'm to a point that I might be willing to trade a Kenwood NX-3300 K2 in like new condition for the BCD996P2.

Thoughts?

No scanners decode MDC-1200. People have been asking for that for well over a decade, no manufacturer ever added it, so it's probably never going to happen at this point. Most modern scanners are capable of LTR decoding, which is a dying format that is being replaced with NXDN or DMR in most cases.

As this is a modern day fringe case use of a dying protocol, I'd just dedicate a suitable used radio to this endeavor. Get a cheap radio, program it up, and go for it. Many moons, ago I used to scan the town LTR - and every scanner I used to do so would lose decoding ability MILES before the Motorola mobile radio that I replaced it with.

CDM1550LS+ are cheap on the ebay.

It's a unique situation. The LTR system here isn't going away anytime soon. The system has been whored out over the years and there are multiple sections of this company that use undocumented talkgroups. I want the scanner aspect to be able to talkgroup search as opposed to talkgroup scan to keep an eye on new, undocumented talkgroups. The MDC decoding would just be icing on the cake. For now I have resorted to my RS Pro-97 and my Kenwood NX-5700 side by side.

Best way, if MDC decode is that important to you, get a Motorola radio with display ie XPR-7550. Most any digital scanner available can do LTR.

The problem with the Moto is that I need to watch the entire LTR system. Even watch undocumented talk groups. THATS my dilemma. :)
