Scanner recommendation

I'm getting back into listening, I'm mainly interested in listening to OPP, fire and paramedics in the Ottawa area. Any recommendations on the best scanner for this?

Im a uniden fan. The 396xt for portable and the 996xt for mobile will give you everything available.

I have a 396t portable and works fine for the region. The other suggestions made are also acceptable.

To listen to the OPP around Ottawa, you'll need a digital scanner which is capable of VHF trunking. The VHF trunking will also allow you to listen to the MOH.

For Ottawa Fire, you'll need a scanner capable of 800Mhz EDACS trunking.


If you're looking at new, then a 396xt (portable), 996xt (base, mobile) or a Home Patrol-1 would be your choices from Uniden.

The older 396T and 996T are also good choices since many people are selling them used since moving up to the XT series.

There are also GRE made scanners but I'm not familiar with that line. I'm sure somebody else will chime in with what they have to offer.

for the gre models there are the psr 500 psr 600 and comming out soon is the psr 800 those three models from gre are digital and can track vhf trunking and edacs

and radio shack which has good deals with digital scanners are the pro 106 and the pro 197
