It is basically a VOX recording program.

You need to connect the audio output of your scanner to the line input on your sound card.

Then fire up ScanRec and tell it to start recording. It'll only record when there is audio on the line. You need to setup the scanner to only scan talkgroups you want to record.

SCANREC is a good program I have been using. It only records from computer when it see's audio coming in. So If you scanner is set to que up only when someone is talking then it records otherwise it just listens.

I tinkered around quite a bit with quality settings to get it to be an optimal setting in terms of disk space and audio quality. I'll post them when I get home, but IIRC, I use the Lame MP3 encoder, 11,025k 16 bit mono, which gives me something like 800 hours on a 10 gig drive. I'll double check when I get home though.

I once tried with an older version 8k samples/s, 8 bit, non-encoded, and got
acceptable results (for my purposes). Not everyone has a hugh disk, or the
option to fill it up regardless of size.

Yeah, I checked my settings, they're what I posted above. It seems to work alright. The audio quality isn't any noticibly different than the source audio.
