I need recommendations for a scanner for the Indianapolis 500. I've tried a couple Racing Electronics scanners and they both suffer from the same problem. The audio quality is shrill and terrible. All I need the scanner to do is pick up the radio broadcast on 454.0000 from my seat. I've tried a quality FM portable and while it sounds great, it's delayed by roughly 30 seconds which is exasperating when you're watching live. The Indianapolis 500 Radio Network broadcasts at 454.0000 and there is no delay, but it sounds terrible on my RE gear.

Suggestions?

Wondering why the quality FM portable would introduce a delay and why a scanner would not have a delay??

More important than the scanner is the headphones you are using, that is what will determine sound quality.

Live broadcasts over a commercial station are required to have a delay by the FCC, a scanner isn't picking up a radio/TV station it is picking up a signal directly from the two way frequency used at the track, 454.000.

Because they delay the broadcast so they can beep foul language. Drivers tend to swear when they crash out.

I assumed by 'quality FM portable' the OP was referring to a handheld portable radio like a MoTo or GE HH and not a broadcast FM receiver. Thanks.
