Can you link to one for mini USB as the SDS100 uses? I haven't found any in my brief search but wouldn't be surprised if they exist.
That might be true as I use the micro port to supply power and leave the battery fully charged. I will have a look if there's a mini USB available.
Another issue are with GPS, as it uses the 5:th pin in the micro USB and that pin are usually not connected in standard USB cables.

I was supposed to make the GPS plural and not singular but the S throw me off as it sounded kind of right. It should have said GPS's I guess. ;-)

It's a bit strange as magnetic connectors usually comes in three flavors, Micro, C and Iphone but mini seems to not be supported.

If you or anybody else can ever locate the magnetic "USB-C" adaptors, I will gladly purchase several.
So the "micro" port can supply power only? Interesting, I have never messed with it, as I didn't want to potentially damage anything.

Nearly all I've seen comes with a C, a micro and a iPhone tip.

Can anyone shed any insight on what connections will be needed at the remote display?

I’ve been waiting to do a mobile installation, and I would like to go ahead with it, but it would be nice to run all needed connections now so moving the radio and installing the remote display later is easier.

Of course there will be a data connection btw the display and radio, so what type of cable should I pre-run? Will the display need its own power source? Any insight appreciated.

The connection to the radio will usually be a simple USB cable.

The USB connector for your radio will likely be a USB Mini unless you have an SDS200, in that case it will be a USB Micro. If you have a 996, BCT15 or 536 series scanner you would also be able to connect the remote head to the rear DB-9 serial port if you prefer. Also, for older radios like the 396, 996XT or BCT15/15X that do not have a USB port then the Hirose serial port on the front could be used with the serial cable that comes with the radio.

If you are going to run audio then plan on an audio cable as well.
The remote head will run on 12VDC, so power would also be needed for it.

Reading some of the prior posts about the magnetic USB connectors: These will NOT work with the remote head, they are for charging only and do not support data transfer.

They likely have 2 conductors only (power and common) and do not connect the two data pins that are vital for data transfer.

There are plenty of magnetic USB cables that are 4 pin that supports both data and charging. If it mentions data in the description it will be of the correct kind. You can also look at pictures if the magnetic surface have more than 2 contact areas.

Thanks for the info.

It will be an SDS200. Just looking at USB Micro cable distance limitations. Do I need to have USB 3.x capability, or will 2.0 be sufficient?

While USB specs usually indicate a 3 meter (16 feet) cable length restriction I have used a straight thru 25-foot extension and 1-meter cable for about 9 meters in length (28 feet) with no issues. YMMV however.

I also have an active USB extension cable that I use on occasion as needed, it too is 25 feet but has a powered (off the USB line) data repeater. It too has worked fine.

For longer distances there are USB over Ethernet systems out there that would extend the reach to over a hundred feet or more.

So, if I'm following this right; you'd use the 9 pin connector on the back 536 to use the remote head.
Wouldn't that prevent the use of the gps while mobile with the 536?
If I recall correctly, I thought someone said earlier in this or another thread (may have been N9JIG?) that it'll have a GPS module built in, so this wouldn't be an issue for you.

See below…
GPS Module. This built-in GPS receiver will provide real-time GPS positioning for supported scanners so that you will not need an additional GPS receiver.

Great. I have the Uniden unit, so I suppose I'll put that up for sale if I end up with a RH200. For me, it would be nice if it's an add on option, but I don't expect that they'll do that.

I've also used the cheapest USB 10 meter extension cable with a GPS and never had a problem. If the RH200's USB interface are programmed to work at its lowest speed of 1.5Mbps, maybe already all Uniden scanners use that for their USB ports when seeing their transfer speed, then you can probably even use longer cables than that.
