I was wanting to know how far people in WV can hear on their scanners. I live about 60 miles from Charleston and would like to know if it would be possible for me to pick them up.
I live in Marietta and I hear the turnpike and the city often ( high band ) however I am using a 5094 Channel Master 40ft up and live on a hill. It depends which direction you are from Charleston ( terrain ) and whether or not you have a good outside antenna
I live in wood county and can hear jackson, wirt, roane, gilmer, ritchie, pleasants, kanawha, cabell, mason, tyler, calhoun and alot more .
Also can recieve a good part of eastern Ohio .
I live in nw VA and can hear Berkeley Co fire dispatcher & SO repeater without a problem. I can hear Jefferson Co WV SO & FD (both primary chs. are repeated) without a problem. I can here the Hampshire EMS dispatcher when the call is in the eastern part of the county. All are about 35 miles from my location.
I have picked up fire primary channels repeated from the TRS onto the origional freqs as well as base stations from 70 miles away using a mobile antenna inside.
One thing to check for is the output power available in the database by clicking the FCC license indentification. Conventional stations with 100 watts can be heard about 35 miles, but at 300 watts can easily be heard at 50 miles. Digital systems have a much higher output, perhaps because they have a much narrower signal.
And one last note, I can't pick the Morgan Co TRS, although I tried. It's an LTR, I don't recall the ch. order being confirmed yet. I live 35 miles and several mountian ranges away, so I doubt I could get the system anyway.
Where do you live? I'm from Charleston and travel a lot, and might be able to tell you if I can typically hear the Charleston stuff in my truck from there.
I can hear several of the Logan Co. public safety towers, so you should be able to hear ours. Look in the database here; you'll get what you need to know. It's pretty good.
I can hear Cabell, Putnam, Mason, Jackson, Roane, Nicholas, Raleigh, Fayette, Boone, Lincoln, and Logan counties from my truck with some degree of success, and occasionally further away, using this antenna:
