I’ve read where people have issues with the sma connector on their scanner. Would you still receive traffic with a broken sma connector I was using the diamond srh789 antenna and I was measuring it with a ruler to get it to the right length for the frequency I want. I accidentally tapped the antenna with the metal end of the ruler twice and if it would cause damage to my sma connector

If the signal is strong enough then you might hear some traffic. You will still want to have a proper antenna connected, even if it means sending the radio in for repair.

So is there any visible damage to the SMA on the SDS100? (or on your SRH789) - If not my 'guess' is all is fine

If the SMA connector is loose it could be intermittently receiving or even receiving fine if it is electrically still connected. Eventually however even a decent electrical connection will likely break if the connector was loose. If that is the case it should be repaired. If you are up to it, a loose connector could be tightened by yourself by removing the case off the back of the radio, tightening the nut and then applying some sort of lacquer to help reduce the chance of it happening again. This assumes of course that the electrical connection is sound, if not I would send it in for repair.
