How do you turn back light off and keep it off while receiving ? Must have something to do with the sq control ! I thought by using the radio as a fixed receiver that keeping back light off would cut down on heat generated by the back light...! The manual does not mention anything at all about this feature...! I just wonder if is a backlight feature !

To turn the backlight off on the SDS 100

Settings: Display Options

Set Timer

Set Squelch to off

Key press can be anything

Turn the screen off by momentarily pressing the on/off. Screen will remain off unless you press a key.

I'd like to know how to keep my display screen ON at all times even when not plugged in. Let me worry about the battery usage. Just tell me how to do it.

Thanks, but can you be more specific? Where is the keypress setting in the menu, or does it need to be done in sentinal?

Go to "display settings">"backlight options">"set key backlight" and from there you can set it as you wish. This is done directly from the scanner itself.

As far as heat generation goes, turning the backlights off does not reduce the heat by much at all. Most of the heat generated is from the TV Tuner chip front end in the radio.
Even with the backlights off, the display itself is also still active. Aim a light source from an angle and you can see the display still running. Being LCD though, the display itself draws very little power, hence the lack of heat production along with the backlights.

I also run my SDS100 with the backlights always on regardless of power source. I'm never away from an external source to ever deplete the battery though.
Uniden still gives the user option to reduce or turn off backlighting as every little thing you don't need can increase battery life for those that do run portable all the time.

My issue is that all the sudden today I have noticed that my SDS100 is not going off even though it is on battery power. I have it set to stay always on when plugged in, but to flash on / off with squelch when on battery. Today it randomly stopped doing that, even though I have not changed anything.

Thoughts?

The backlight uses so little power and produces so little heat it is a total non-factor in both areas from what I see.
