I got my Ham Technician license in 2006 so I could put a scanner in my car and be within the law. Turns out I enjoyed Ham radio after studying for my Tech ticket I kept going and passed the General license and the Extra licenses. The desire to put a scanner in my car turned into a new hobby for me so it was well worth it in my case. I replaced the scanner with a 2-meter ham radio in my car.
