I have made a favorite list and the trunked system has many sites, I have my scanner set to 50.0 miles. Do I have to go into this favorite list and change all the sites to 50.0 miles or does the scanner override the ranges in each site location.

I thought if I set the range in the SDS100 scanner this would be the maximum distance for receiving frequencies, why do they have this 50.0 mile setting, is this not the maximum distance you can set the SDS100.
I want to set all favorite list to maximum receive distance how do you do this with the SDS100.

Range setting has NOTHING to do with receive distance. It just governs what will load.
Read the link above that Jon posted.

Did you read the article I linked? If not, do so.

Range has NOTHING to do with receiver sensitivity. It's used to determine what items get scanned. Setting Range to 50 miles means you'll be scanning a bunch of stuff the scanner can't actually hear, unless you're on top of a mountain with a really good antenna setup.

Uniden's use of the terms Profile and Range aren't exactly intuitive. You are not the first, and certainly not the last, to get tripped up by this. I think I had to read the Location article twice to get a working grip on it.

Yea sometime I have a problem with following these instructions, I don't answer questions like some people do and it goes over my head, I have had the same problem with other scanners, but there are people out there that understand this and don't talk down to you and are very helpful, thanks for everyone's help. I have set my scanner the proper way know and I do see the logic in this now.

Well put. I, too, had to read it more than once. The choice of terms may be lacking but the technology behind it makes sense.

The database have ranges set to frequencies and talk groups and those have been put there by a human person. That person might not have the proper info or knowledge when setting the range value. You probably have to be almost a radio expert to actually be able to determine a sites actual coverage. The database depend of what people report in to it, but if no radio knowledge person are in that area then the range values might be way off.

Some frequencies have been set to 5 miles when they can be heard at least 20 miles by scanner listeners. Sometimes sites do not have the correct GPS positions and can be miles from where they are actually placed.

When you set the scanners range to zero you are using the exact range values from the database. If you set the scanner to a 10 mile range you'll add that to the database values. The need to set larger values in the scanner are crucial and are made available by Uniden due to errors in the database and different antennas used and how well the listening location works to receive different sites. Also time of season and wheather will influence a sites coverage range. The database values are likely set to work when you drive and use GPS control and with a limited antenna and only loads the extreme local systems as they are probably your first priority to monitor. But it is probably far from what the scanner can actually hear and monitor, especially if you are at home and using external antennas.

What you could do when starting fresh and monitoring from home are to set the range to the highest value and input your loacations coordinates. Then when you hear a site or a frequency, write that down and avoid the site or frequency and later move that to a favorite list in Sentinel. Do not avoid talkgroups, they do not slow down scanning, only frequencies and sites do. After a while you have a favorite list containing only the things you can hear and will be scanning from home. You can do different favorite lists for the stuff that are out of state and/or noninteresting but could be useful to have prepared for use at another time. You usually don't need to use location controlled scanning in favorite lists so turn that off in Sentinel or in the scanners menu for the favorite lists.

And that is how the database is supposed to work. The actual reception range is not to be used for RR range, the range should be the coverage of the intended reception. City-county-statewide - etc.

I keep the location control in fav lists ON.

Then if I'm mobile and not in range it turns them off. Otherwise I'd have to manually turn on and off each fav list (if I'm moving around).

Assuming you have a connected GPS or update your location.
