I've gotten a few scratches to the screen glass over time on my SDS 100. Is this something that's user replaceable, or would it need a trip in for service to get new screen glass if I chose to do that?

glass polisher should be able to remove most of the scratches, if they are not too deep. I've used polywatch on my sds100 , kenwood th74, and Icom D52. No issues . Get a screen saver once you remove the scratches to prevent future scratches.

Is it actually glass? I thought the screens on the Uniden scanners were maybe acrylic or something. I didn't think they were actually glass.

One would think there should be. I mean there's one for the 436

Here are some ideas:

SDS100 Screen
Interesting thread. @n1chu had the issue back in April and now it looks like 436 owners can get just the clear plastic from Uniden for 6 bucks.

If you do manage to find one, there are screen protectors all over the web

This is N1chu and I never had an issue with my SDS100. The first thing I did was order up a protective screen, installed it and never looked back. I remember relating getting an entire outer shell for my 436, and what I had to go through to get it. (My intent was to return the scanner to a pristine look if I were to sell it, or simply use it myself if and when the scanner started to show wear.)

Sears Optical used to sell a polish for eyeglass lenses that filled in scratches which worked very well. But Sears is not around anymore and I haven’t had a need for the polish for years, but I imagine something like it is still around.

I wonder if the newer ceramic polishes for cars would work?

@n1chu never had a. Issue with the display window on the SDS100… I am N1chu. What I did was relate what I went through with Uniden when I asked them to send me a replacement front and back case, including the display window for a BCD436.

Bill,

never said you had an sds100. I quoted the link Doc posted (where you clearly state BCD436HP)
If it’s anything like their previous BCD436HP handheld, it’s not just a one piece swap out. They sent me an assembly because in order to get the piece it’s the only way they came. Hope you have better luck.

I said "the issue" meaning, trying to get a simple part that was not available for sale.

Maybe your letter to Texas is why 436 owners can now get just the clear screen for cheap. Now it looks to be a one piece swap out, but was not back in April.

Dave3825,

Thanks for the clarification. Your thought that my actions might have prodded Uniden into sectioning out the display glass/plastic is something that never crossed my mind… but knowing their track record, I doubt that’s what happened. The SDS100 case looks to be a re-use of their existing case used for their portable marine transceivers and it was probably always like that. The 436 on the other hand looked to be an assembled part, where the display was just one part of it. That assembly included the weatherproofing, frame, etc., all put together as one piece before the final assembly. I’m just guessing. But it’s nice to think I had a hand in causing them to rethink the display parts issue, even if it weren’t true.

A little late to the party on this but I wanted to extend thanks for the recommendation of Polywatch as well. I have BCD436HP that had (past tense intended) some pretty noticeable scratches. Not sure what's in it; don't want to know, but it's good stuff!

I already had and use this kit for the screen. Takes about one minute per cutting compound with your finger and a cloth. 435ml 3M marine gel coat cutting compound kit.
