Current setup:
SDS200 with Comet DS150 discone, Sirio SD3000N discone, and Comet KP20. Antennas fed into Stridsberg MCA204A with lmr400 coax. Open port on combiner has a 50ohm load. 20db 25 to 2000mhz pre-amp.
First impressions:
It's big. Works great as a base, but would be tough in some mobile installs. Used stick on urethane feet for base install.
The display is also big, which is a good thing. Data is clearly visible, which is a real plus.
It's pretty. Even has backlit keys which can be set via the menu. Menu button has been combined with squelch knob. Has a headphone jack right on the front.
Receive audio is excellent. Plenty of audio to drive any speaker, no amp needed. Some local signals were a bit harsh, activated the attenuator for these sites and audio is good like the rest.
Location is 1150' ASL.
Hearing aviation traffic from Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, and both Carolinas. Ancient Mary audio is quite good, and the squelch works well.
Hearing low band VHF conventional stations in Alabama, Tennessee, and Georgia.
UHF DMR systems are coming in well also.
700/800 Mhz P25 systems are where this rig is amazing. Copying AFRN from east Alabama, TACAN from southeast Tennessee , and systems all over Georgia. It is routine to receive P25 systems up to a 150 miles, which still surprises me.
I feel it receives a little better than the SDS100. The main thing I like about the SDS200 is the versatility in frequency and range. Instead of having multiple rigs covering specific frequencies and modes, I have one that will do it all. I sold my 536 and 436, and combined the various antennas for a much streamlined desktop.
Using ARC99 for programming, and Pro Scan on the computer. Both work well.
Have not played with LAN feature yet.
Big thanks to UPman for all his work on these fantastic rigs.
And thanks to Jeff at Ham Station for having the rig shipped direct from Texas.
