All the Seattle police cars when I was there look older to me; the grille is chrome as opposed to back as I mostly see. I saw some chargers... is that their new paint scheme? Also, the chargers didn't have lightbars on top... what are the different of use between the crown vics and the chargers? thanks

I doubt the cars are "old", most departments reuse the old equipment and ditch the cars when they come to their end of useful life status. So all the stuff like light bars, antennas, radios, push bars are reinstalled on new cars... So they may look old.

P71 Crown Vics with the "street appearance" package have chrome grilles instead of the black on the standard P71s.

Seattle gets new cars every couple of years (a friend of mine told me they run their cars 100,000 miles and then pull them from service). They just move the equipment from old car to new car. You notice none of the patrol cars have L.E.D. lightbars on them!! The Traffic division got the Chargers a couple of years ago.

Not sure if Seattle PD is doing it, but I know quite a few agencies have gone up to 120-150,000. I know WSP is 120,000, started a few years back. Technology has gotten better so cars last a little longer, and it helps save money right now while no one has any anyway...

1. SPD orders their cars with a chrome grille, but they are NOT the street appearance package.. They ordered them that way because they believe the black honeycomb grille is too aggressive

2. They retire cars based on year, condition, and mileage. The last car I bought from them was an '04 with ~60K miles on it..

You wouldn't believe how many miles the taxi companies put on them AFTER they get the old police cars. Some of them have everything to completely refurbish crown vics. I wonder what they will use after the fords get scarce?

Maybe Checker will re-appear :p

LOL... I was in Oakland, CA and hopped a cab home from the airport... Had ~864,000 miles on it... Probably a few rebuilt engines during that time but it still sounded like it was going to explode...

Most agencies are keeping their cars longer, much longer. I usually buy from the State Thruway Authority, since the car are used on the highway only. When I first started buying them, they were retired at 70-80K, now anything that runs can have upwards of 150K on it. I was in cab at Riverside a few years ago, the driver says everything was original (former LAPD car) and the car had 495,000 miles on it! The only good thing I can say about California when I was out there were the roads, they are absolutely beautiful, not a single pothole to be found. The two CVPI I have only have about 160K , and 140K on them. The main problem with car's from the North East is that they rust away, before their time. My Charger has 10K on it, since it stays in the garage most of the time.
BTW New York City doesn't allow used cop cars anymore, for about 10 years now, and just awarded the bid for the type of cab they want there. It was a Ford, but no more Crown Victoria's. I believe it came from some where overseas, possibly Asia, it looks like the newer cabs in England and Ireland.

The grumpy officer who clipped me for allegedly speeding on Aurora @ 47th stated he and his new Charger are part of their DUI and Aggressive driving task force.

Attorney Doug Silva, who handles most of Yellow Cab driver's tickets got my ticket dismissed. Ha-ha, thbbpbbt, SPD.
