I think the use mag mounts on some vehicles, since they are government leases.

My feelings is they don't stay in fleet too long being leases and they are not going to get permanent radio installs.

This is likely why it's not a permanent install. That small section of roof back there is likely stiffeners and support for the roof opening.

I noticed it also and made a phone call. Its triband but oddly, all USSS vehicles that have the APX 8500 was to have the motorola beer can (triband) which was drilled/magmounted on all DC units. Saw almost every unit in 3 motorcades on last visit to DC and all had the beer can. Boston Homeland Security also converted the the 8500's and got the beercan.
In a recent Biden Motorcade on Boston, All the vehicles that were perminently assisgned had them drilled. Others (without perminent light shows) were leased and had magmounts. The local PDs in motorcade has magmounts in VHF and a 6000 on the seat.
(1)They could be "special" for NYC (as everything in NYC PD and FD is special made). VHF for USSS and 450-512 for comms with NYC.
(2) An idea that they are purchasing other than Motorola that has their own priority antenna?

Ill be in NH Tuesday for Trump's multi site run, and Ill get pics of whats there

I'm seeing them come up more often on pictures of some new police/fire vehicles, these and the other multiband single whip moto antenna, some places call them tri-band being marketed as '150+450+800Mhz'. these days with multiband radio = multiband antenna. probably a lot easier and most importantly cheaper instead of multiple antennas and installation costs. Yea STI-CO stuff.

They also have this alien looking thing called the STI-CO interoperable mobile antenna

Harris sells that Sti-Co antenna with the Harris logo on it. Oh, and a 50% mark up….

They are really flexible, like the Sti-co whips.

I've been purchasing XL-200M's at work, but I won't buy those antennas based on the price and the goofy looks. I went with Larsen multiband whips.

Another antenna I won't buy based on its looks. Our officers would probably get laughed at if I put those on the cars.

I saw that as well. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the S.S. using COMPACtenna's on their vehicles and wasn't COMPACtenna bragging about it in their ads? I wonder what changed? Better deal (free stuff) from STI-CO?

My Fire Company has the Harris version of that tri-band on our tanker. It works for V/U/7/8.

Hi, checked today at Trumps rally in NH. Met a USSS friend of mine on the detail. The portable he had was the 8000 and in jeep was a apx 8500. It had the beer can multi band antenna. Chatting with a couple, one of the guys said they have the new ones on the NYC field office. He told me outside of major cities the beer can works great and they are please because most of the comms are over their VHF. In Boston for the VP he said the car radios worked great to monitor Boston/Bapern and MSP SOPS very well.
In NYC they monitor so many channels (some suburbans have 2 8500's) they have better luck with the new ones you are chatting about.

Are you referring to the beer can as the Motorola AN000131A01 or 02 made by PCTEL or the Laird WPD136M6C also sold under the Harris brand?

the whip alone is $150ish agency cost but it is a NICE antenna that can take a beating.
State and local agencies are switching to it, since its the same cost as that stupid multiband laird that likes to let water get inside and corrode, AND its significantly lower profile and can take a hit.
