Serial port to USB

Hi, guys:

Both my handheld 296D and base 796D have computer cords with serial ports on them, yet my computer doesn't have a serial port. Lots of USB ports, though. Is there an adaptor I can use?

There are many adapters many people are using. I had problems with a few with this laptop, but the Belkin adapter works fine.

I have a 246T and use the radio shack adapter and it has worked great so far.

In general, most of the adapters being sold now will work. However, you must be sure to go get the latest driver for the adapter (the one supplied might or might not be the latest, depending on how long the unit sat on the shelf). First generation drivers did not properly emulate all the signals for the serial port, so had a lot of compatibility problems. For the most part, fixing in this case is only a matter of updating the driver.

Belken can be confusing on drivers as their site does not show version numbers. Just a heads up to anyone on that brand.

The F5U109 has a direct link from the first page (just search for F5U109) to the drivers page, and a driver that's dated 6/6/2005. I haven't found anything it won't work with yet.

Back during the Shack days, I've seen many adapters. Some worked but the majority did not. No, I'm not selling RS USB to Serial adaptors anymore.

The price of the RS unit was spendy compared to most and typically generated an error message indicating that you will fry your computer if you install the drivers needed. There is no problems installing the drivers. At least I've never seen one and I've installed many drivers for people.

Note: After installing the drivers and getting the unit working... if you change the USB port you plug into the serial port number ALSO changes.

The only time I have ever seen the RS unit not work was on a cheapie laptop. I presume that it was not providing adequate power to drive the adaptor.

Additional note: The RS drivers come on a floppy disk :roll: not a CD. Hopefully the kind folks at RS will burn you a CD to load on a laptop if your laptop does not have a floppy disk.

Mine came on a CD and works fine.
