Date: January 10, 2007
A lot of snow and ice covered Western Washington for a few days in January. The snow fell fast and stuck on the night of January 10, 2007. Temperatures then dropped to around 20 degrees Fahrenheit and stayed that way until about the 15th of January. If you’re not from Washington and wondering why Washingtonians freak out so much when it snows, it is because of the our mountainous region . . . many of us live on hills or at least go over one or two on the way to our jobs or school. Speaking of “school”, it was obviously cancelled, and the first day it reopened buses operated on emergency snow routes (in most areas). Metro bus drivers were told not to stop at bus-stops that were located on the upward half of hills so they wouldn’t get stuck. Many people had to abandon their cars if they didn’t have chains. And police in some areas were only responding to injury accidents, because there were so many minor ones. The WSDOT and local government worked round the clock to clear roads of slippery ice and snow, but some people were forced to stay in their homes and let the snow melt before venturing out.
Heres a few pics of our 3rd flood in a month. Thank goodness that this one wasn't as bad as the last two. Unfortunately if you lived close to the river you still got a house full of water. These are from 1-6-07
The blizzard of 2007 in upstate New York, February 14, 2007. It had been snowing for only about 12 hours when this picture was taken and continued for about another 12 hours. All in all we ended up with almost 3 feet of snow...
These pics were taken in September of 2004 during the floods in Asheville, NC. This flood caused the entire city water supply to fail when it washed out the water mains just below the water supply lake. The Swannanoa River is normally maybe 2 feet deep and 15 feet wide but during this flood it was nearly 40 feet deep in places and over 1/4 mile wide. The pictures you see are of the Swannanoa Bridge where New US 70 and Old US 70 meet in Swannanoa, NC. That bridge is nearly 50 feet above the normal water line. The other picture was taken from the Circuit City lot in Asheville, NC looking across the river to the Lowes. The oil tank is from nearly a mile upstream at Smokey Mountain Petroleum. It ruptured and left the entire area smelling like fuel oil for weeks.
