What would be some options for listening to MPSCS? Non scanning is fine. Unication costs too much. I am wondering about the Motorola XTS5000 (and others). Would I need to purchase software?

You can buy a decent used scanner for the price of the Motorola software, and it is much easier to understand and program.

I am going to say this nicely. You just asked the wrong question on the wrong website. The Admins on the MPSCS watch this site like a Hawk. Your IP Address is probably already getting Pinged as we speak. And I bet in a few days SWAT will pay you a Visit. That system is not one to play with. I live on Nevada and know they don’t play. Just saying

KG7PBS, Michigan has one of the better scanner laws, and most law enforcement is either part of the MPSPCS or patched into the system. A scanner is the only way to follow their trunked system. Get a ham license and you can even have a scanner in your car without worry unless you do something really stupid. Without the ham license, you can still have the scanner, but just don't arrive at the crime scene before the police.

Oh does the XTS transmit? Is that what you are talking about. I do have my ham ticket. I am just looking for something cheaper than a scanner.

By the time you do an XTS-5000, software (purchased legally or otherwise), programming cable, new battery, plus the steep learning curve for programming those things, you really would be much better off with an appropriate scanner.

I've never had to program a Motorola for non-affiliate scan. I've always had system keys and access to them (they were my own systems). It's not easy, and you'll likely need a lot of assistance.

A scanner will give you a lot more flexibility than a single band radio.

I don't think you are going to find anything cheaper than a scanner to monitor MPSCS. All the commercial grade radios are going to cost more.

The law was changed in late 2006. You no longer have to have a ham license or scanner permit in Michigan to have a scanner in your vehicle. Showing up at a crime scene at all, yet alone before the police show up is not a good idea.

Under the current law, anyone may have a scanning receiver in their home, automobile, or on your person. The exceptions to that are when using it in the commission of a crime, or having been convicted of a felony within the last 5 years. In that case, you cannot have a scanner at all.

Look Son. I am talking about illegally putting a Motorola Radio on a System that you have no Right to be on. One thing is if he is here asking for help he is way over his head. I don’t want him to get Arrested for theft of service if they find his radio on the system. The MPSCS has very proactive system administrators that Hunt people down like him. If he try’s to go though with this. it’s Friendly advice

The Unication G4 is slightly cheaper than a SDS100, so if you only want to monitor MPSCS, that's your cheapest option. If you want to monitor more than that, the SDS100. Anything else is going to be more expensive, and entail potential legal issues if not programmend exactly right.

There are options now for scanner hobbyists for a scanner that does a half-way decent job with Simulcast. As others have already pointed out, Unication and Uniden both have radios that are capable. Doing NAS on an XTS5000 is a major PITA, you only get to scan a maximum of 15 talkgroups and that is after modifying CPS to do so.

The comment about your IP being scanned and the SWAT team ready to come to your house is beyond comical.

Vinnie ("The Talon") Talancon is absolutely right! To some, he may look like a hamsexy motorola wanker Paul Blart on his social-media but as a uniformed, private security-specialist, Vinnie is plugged-in to all sorts of classified federal, state & local law enforcement tactics, techniques & procedures, and obviously he's got good sources within Michigan State Police, specifically Michigan Intelligence Network Team & the State Fusion Center, tipping him off with confidential information about their RR surveillance program. The question now is who will they bust first, Vinnie for the unauthorized disclosure of law enforcement-sensitive info, or the North Korean sleeper-agent who committed so many felonies by daring to ask about the best way to monitor MPSCS?? My sources aren't as good as Vinnie's, but corraborating what Vinnie has stated, I too have been told that the MSP Emergency Support Team (aka MSP SWAT) are getting specialized training to handle busting radio-geeks -- how to negotiate with the target's mother to gain verbal consent to go down to the target's basement bedroom instead of getting a search-warrant, wearing special boots that muffle the sound of Doritos being stepped-on as the officers sneak-up on the target, special flex-cuffs made for morbidly obese & extremely skinny, greasy wrists, etc.

This is why I miss having Hooligan on the BBS we met on, a long time ago. (Sorry for the drift...)
