Here in Arkansas we are getting some real bad weather, so I switched to my Severe weather system I downloaded from RR, Arkansas, using my new BCD996XT. I am new so just wondering why I am not hearing anything. With this bad weather was expecting alot of chatter, but nothing, not a whisper...hhmmm

I am not that far away from you in St. Louis and it seems like it has been raining for days!
I think that perhaps we are being subjected to "weather overload" on TV which is a lot more information than the average person really needs or cares about. When I was a kid (I am only 52!), weather was a fairly insignificant part of the news. There was a brief summary of what happened that day and then their best guess as to what the next day, maybe two would look like. Weather predictions for the weekend usually happened on Thursday, not Monday! Nowadays, we are saturated (no pun intended!) with a lot of information about the climactic conditions and I still think that all people really want to know is if they need to take a jacket or umbrella to work tomorrow. The fact that there are tightly packed isobars three states over is lost on 99.9% of the viewing audience.
Back in the day, we used to call weather like this rain. Now they call it a "rain event". Every day, the meteorologists on TV have to fill their time slot whether anything notable is happening or not!
I guess the point of my rant/commentary is that sometimes it rains and that is it. Water falls from the sky and its no big deal. There is no need to call a severe weather net every time it gets cloudy outside! Be thankful your scanners are silent!

Tell the family of the person who died in the tornado that it was "just rain." There were nearly a dozen injured too...
To answer the OP's question - either your county didn't have the need for Skywarn, or you have the wrong frequencies programmed in.

Thanks FLRAILMAN! It obviously does not surprise me about that weather man in Canada.
In St. Louis, no one here really puts any trust in the weather forecasts, especially from the TV meteorologists. We live in the most difficult region of the country for predicting weather. We are in a valley, between two major rivers in the middle of the country. Even the professional meteorologists at the NWS told me that they can pretty reliably forecast the weather 24 hours out, maybe 48 hours at best. 72 hours out is a total crap shoot in most cases. The fact that the TV stations give 7 day forecasts is just total one-upsmanship on their part. It started out with one station giving a four day forecast so the next one would give a five day forecast and so on. Seriously, they do give the forecast for the upcoming weekend on Monday and the joke around our house is, "Let's see if they get Tuesday right!"
The other thing I don't get is that every statement about the forecast by the TV meteorologists is preceded by the statement, "According to the computer models..." Well, if the computer is going to do the predicting, why do we even need the "carbon-based life form" telling us what the weather is going to be?

Scott called it just a 'rain event' and criticized the coverage as overkill. People died from tornadoes and flooding rainfall. I just don't find that a topic you joke about, let alone on a public forum.
There were other messages ridiculing meteorologists directly - those were removed prior to your post, so I understand if you think this was "over-legitimizing" but you missed out on the attack.
Hmmm... Not sure I see your connection to this thread, or to the OP. If you have an issue with a post - report it to the mods and let them handle.

So you had 146.940MHz in - do you hear ham chatter regularly? That should be an active frequency. Maybe having all those extras tied up the scanner a little too much?
