To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

SMA25 Speaker Microphone with MD785?

Hello,
I know the SMA25A speaker microphone with display was intended for the MD655 model. However I see some dealers selling it as an accessory for the MD785 as well.
When trying the microphone with a MD785 it almost works. The display shows the current zone and channel, I can change volume, channel, zone, etc. TX audio is fine.

The RX audio, however, is very weak and distorted. And an even bigger problem is that after receiving a transmission the radio starts to beep (short beeps for about 1 minute) while display says "Accessory connected". The radio is unresponsive during this time. Eventually the microphone will go dark and then restart to normal operation.

Is the microphone simply not compatible with the radio? Do I need to adjust some settings in the radio specifically for the microphone? Or could the microphone be faulty?

I've tried with two separate radios. They are both MD785G VHF, with firmware V9.02.03.005.iM

Any ideas? Anyone got this combination to work?

I have never seen this combination advertised in Europe. The only way I knew to get this functionality (speaker mic with LCD and control) was with the Bluetooth speaker mic and the bluetooth dongle (which is advertised for the MD7xx). I certainly never thought they were compatible.
