theres no live feed for York police and fire,so there wouldnt be an app.plus York police are encrypted, and the only fire you could hear is just dispatch, nothing else.

It's not the smartphone app that acts as the scanner rather the app is used as an interface to listen to feeds other folks scan and stream to sites like Broadcastify. Unfortunately York Region's police and fire went encrypted when they moved to their new system. The only thing I believe that is not encrypted and monitorable is fire dispatch.

However, if you are interested in checking out an app for your phone, I use Scanner Radio for Android which I find to be pretty good.

FWIW scanner radio and tunein have some services indexed to listen to, but as mentioned you won't hear York. A buddy of mine runs a feed for OPP incl Port Credit channels... which is basically 401 enforcement and crash response.

You can't rely on apps or hope that someone will stream something. You really should get a
Maybe I am a grouchy old man, but we are running out of people who want to try monitor with a scanner

I'm also a grouchy old man. Perhaps he's unfamiliar with scanning and thought it was possible to include that function in a smart phone in order to keep from having to carry two devices.

Many people think smart phones can do everything now. You can track the International Space Station, plot a course to Timbuktu, check your pulse, call the Kremlin, pay your grocery bill, listen to Glenn Miller, tune your guitar, check your credit rating, order a pizza and the list goes on and on. If one isn't intimately familiar with the devices, it might be easy to assume there would be a scanner application for smart phones. There seems to be everything else.

I would honestly be happy to use an actual scanner. Would that work though because everyone here is saying its encrypted now. So would I even be able to listen to anything? Some people have said with a phone app I could hear fire dispatch. How would I do that?

as previously stated, theres no live feed provided, therefore,no app would let you listen to them.you could buy a digital scanner, and use the database on this site to program the trunking system and fire dispatch talkgroups into it in order to listen.thats the only way.

What everyone is saying is, a smart phone will not do it alone. It will depend on outside sources to gather and feed the information. Smart phones have lots of capabilities but, with the exception of cellular and sometimes Bluetooth signals, it will not pick up radio signals.

And even if you load a scanner app, someone else will have to be picking up that particular fire dispatch signal and feeding it out so other could hear it. Generally, only the larger departments are being fed but there are some exceptions.

Oh ok. Sorry I misunderstood what they had said. That being said what kind of scanner would I need to get then?

. The answer may have more to do with your location than what scanner to get..... Like some of us have done, you might have to make the tough choice of moving to another area not affected by encryption. :( 73, n9zas

You don't have to move.

Look at this page from the Wiki: Category:Digital Scanners - The RadioReference Wiki

That should read Digital _Scanners, I'm not being a wise guy, the formatting interprets a colon and D as :D

The models in the B, H, P, W categories will all work.

The first question is your budget. That may narrow down your choices.
I have purchased off of Kijiji,e-Bay and torontokris rather than the retailers purely to save on the bottom line.

Once you find a model that interests you, ask away about it, I'm sure someone owns or has owned it before.

Good luck. :)

I'd second the recommendation to buy from torontokris - he has better prices and (after-sales) service than Radioworld or Durham Radio let alone a faceless online seller.

Where is the Port Credit OPP feed? I don't see it on the scanner apps?
