Exactly. There are channels that have been in place for years, however many people don't know about them and are just now coming into light with the whole "interop" fad.

Also, there are simple cost effective crossband solutions available, along with better SOP's/SOG's. Not everyone needs a radio and those with ones that need to be talking.

Maybe this is the reason why Point Pleasant Beach Fire has that cross band repeater for their fire channel. This makes it easier for the Monmouth County towns to communicate with them in Mutual Aid situations.
