Hello,

First off not sure if this is the correct spot of this, if not please relocate for me. Thanks.

I was just wondering if anyone else is experiencing exceptional receive capabilities the last few weeks? Or is it just me? We had a storm come through a couple months ago and it damaged my two antennas one being a scantenna and the other is a sputnik from RS. On the scantenna on the verticals the 2 outside elements were bent down and on the sputnik 2 of the downward pointing elements got broke off. I haven't had the money to make any replacements yet and we have had virtually no rain since and it has been very hot and dry here. But I'm regularly picking up stations in my neighboring states averaging 400 miles away and a closer stations in my state that normally are also out of range. I'm only getting maybe 1 bar of signal at most on the majority of the transmissions from afar but they are strong enough that I can run the squelch all the way up and still can't block them out. I hear them some during the day but as soon as the sun sets below the horizon the stations I am pulling in easily double in quantity. Most of this is coming in, in the range of 147-159.999.

I figure it about has to be a flare or something like that causing this and not the broken antennas that have been magically "re-tuned" and can hear better now that they've been damaged. That said I don't understand how radio signals, antennas and weather all work together. All I do is look for an antenna that covers the freq. that I'm wanting to listen to and go from there. I'm still a major novice at all this.

Thanks for your time.

Although it's true that solar activity has picked up lately, it's not that. More than likely you are experiencing tropo or another weather related event.

This site has some excellent descriptions of the various (more common) VHF/UHF propagation modes - go to the bottom of...

Tropospheric Ducting Forecast for VHF & UHF Radio & TV

and click on the 'Tropospheric DX Modes' link. You'll get a better understanding of how these signals can travel hundreds of miles or more

best regards..Mike

Tropo has been GREAT the last few nights in the Midwest. Have been working 2M FM and SSB well over 500 miles.
