I've heard 453.675 PL 203.5 in a couple of areas in Somerset. It is definitely an SCI freq. Today I also got 453.275 PL 192.8 which sounded like it was the same facility. Both are common PL's for SCI ops. Any one know for sure which facility in Somerset this is?

Thanks,
Frank K3FSS

Could be SCI Laurel Highlands? That facility isn't listed on the PA DOC page here at RR. If you think that's what it is after further listening, be sure to submit the update. There are a few prisons missing from the list since there was no FCC data for the locations when I compiled the original list (which has since been expanded by others).

453.675 is licensed for use at SCI Albion and SCI Mahanoy. 453.275 is listed on an expired license for SCI Laurel Highlands so the comms are likely coming from there. I missed this expired license previously...just found it now.

Thanks. Now that you mention it, I forgot to check for the expired licenses. I was only searching active ones.

It looks like 453.275 may be a state hospital in Somerset.

I don't get there very often. So, it may take some time for me to pin it down.

No state hospital in Somerset or nearby that is operational, so you can cross that off the list.

Operational state hospitals are located in the following places:

Allentown State Hospital
Clarks Summit State Hospital
Danville State Hospital
Harrisburg State Hospital (closed 2006, still listed on DPW website)
Mayview State Hospital (closing 2008)
Norristown State Hospital
Torrance State Hospital
Warren State Hospital
Wernersville State Hospital

(Useless trivia) Closure dates for various state hospital facilities:

Hollidaysburg State Hospital (1979)
Retreat State Hospital (1980)
Embreeville State Hospital (1980)
Eastern Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute (1981)
Dixmont State Hospital (1984)
Philadelphia State Hospital (1990)
Woodville State Hospital (1992)
Fairview State Hospital (1995)
Somerset State Hospital (1996)
Eastern State School and Hospital (1997)
Haverford State Hospital (1998)
Harrisburg State Hospital (2006)

I do have a submission pending for the database that creates a Dept. of Public Welfare category under PA. It includes frequencies used at the various state hospitals.

The Somerset State Hospital was taken over by Corrections and is known as SCI Laurel Highlands. The primary frequency used is 453.275. SCI Somerset uses a primary frequency of 453.300. As for 453.675, this is new to me, I'll keep and ear on it and report back.

From my monitoring here in Somerset 453.675 is definitly SCI Laurel Highlands.

Are you hearing anything on 453.275 ? I have found 453.675 to be very active and have heard nothing on .275. I am assuming Laurel Highlands switched to this frequency at some point. Normally I do not monitor the prisons as I find it to be rather boring and it ties the radio up from other activity.

I don't listen to them much either. 453.275 still has some activity I think. I've got enough radios I can dedicate one to see if it's still active. It may be up to a week until I post again. My computer is down, and I only get to my parents once a week. I'll let you know what I find.

Thanks for the info. From what I heard it sounded like the same guy on 453.275 right after they did a guard check in. I am pretty sure they were the same. 453.275 was not very active. Let me know what you think.

Thanks,

SCI Somerset / Laurel Highlands Update

I got to speak to an Administrator that works at SCI Somerset. He reports that Laurel Highlands definitely moved to 453.675 as their primary frequency. They still use 453.275 as a secondary frequency. There was some type of interference issue that prompted this move. He feels that the power may have been turned down on .275 also. I got no answer when I questioned why this information wasn't showing up in the FCC database.

In the same conversation he recommended the monitoring of 45.16 / 203.5. This frequency is statewide and is still heavily used.

Thanks Dan. Just listening to 45.160 for a short period this morning there were multiple stations on there. Fayette County, and others I couldn't ID.

BTW Keep up the good work on Scanner Digest - SW PA section

Thanks Frank

If you'd like to contribute to the column, just write something up and send it over to me. I'd be more than glad to publish it, that would be a great help.

As for 45.16 they use it allot whenever they do transports. So who knows what you hear

It's used for a variety of situations, prisoner transport being one.

This is completely why I defiantly like having druhe around, LoL. There's so much data and stuff that he can find out, it just sometimes blows your mind, LoL.

I just found out his Cambria County scanner is listed on Johnstown Police's (JPD)'s web site. LoL.

He even guesses frequencies, like for Pennsylvania Highlands Community College, and is right, HaHa. PHCC still uses GJCTC/Vo-Tech frequencies.

Anyway, isn't Ebensburg a State Center/Hospital? I didn't notice that in the list at all.

Also, I've listened to prison frequencies before, but for example SCI Cresson, all I ever hear is "Close the A gate". Do they ever talk about anything interesting, or is it probably only during stuff like prisoner escapes/fights and stuff?

Also, do our local prisons, have like SWAT teams, that you always see on TV? Don't mind me, I've never been in prison, so my knowledge of prison is a little lacking, :p, LoL.

The Pennsylvania Dept of Corrections does have a CERT team at most, if not all, of the SCI's in the state. I know that Chester County Prison has an ERT team.

I would suspect that most of the larger county facilities have similar units.
