they arent garbled all the time but from time to time they are like dtscho said the p25 system tend to do that at least with our scanners...today wouldve been the perfect day in Stafford to have a feed up..Stafford had to use 4 of there incident channels today for all the brush fires....im getting off topic i think...every area around Stafford is now digital except for Spotsy and KG....so my opinion yea get a digital scanner if you can afford it

Very little worth listening to on any of those incident channels today and most of the people using them wished they were not there... I actually have already purchased the scanner and the sole purpose will be for a live feed, but the programming instructions are a bit intimidating and the issue with occasional garbled audio makes me wonder if I shouldn't just return it. Just want to see if others would be interested in having a live feed for only the new Stafford digital system or if anyone else is about to step up to the plate on this one. How often is the garbled audio? Extremely annoying or an occasional inconvenience? I could easily be swayed one way or another at this point.

Just a quick reception report: I've noticed the system comes in very well from downtown Fredericksburg. Really no garbled transmissions at all. But from my home in Spotsylvania a few miles southwest of the city, there is quite a bit of garbling.

Just goes to show how these simulcast systems can vary dramatically from place to place depending on your location in relation to one or more towers.

I am considering purchasing a digital scanner and providing a radio reference feed for all Stafford fire channels. Will it be worth the effort with the garbled transmissions others are reporting? Fredva, are you still considering the upgrade, and if so will you be feeding the digital channels to rr?

I've been a little slow about getting a digital scanner primarily because I've had some uncertainty with my job situation. At this point, I'm leaning toward getting one but not committing to it just yet. Even if I do purchase one and include Stafford 700 MHz talkgroups, my feed would still have Spotsy and Fredericksburg on it as well. So there would be nothing wrong with somebody else having a dedicated Stafford fire feed, if you feel so inclined.

Hi Fred, buy the scanner. Then, if you suddenly become unemployed you will have something to listen to all day. ;-)

No, not having a problem with picking up in the middle of a transmission. The only problem I've experienced (and only in certain locations) is the garbling from simulcast digital distortion.

By the way, I'm using a BCD396XT with Radio Shack 800 MHz antenna.

Stafford 700 Fire & Rescue system coming in really great here in Falmouth and while I am in the county heading to the Pentagon along I-95. However, I noticed I was missing some dispatch alerts due to VSP STARS traffic and have now dedicated an older radio to 154.175 so we at least always here the initial Stafford dispatch and alert tones. Sounds like Fredericksburg Ladder 1 at least is also on the system for mutual aid. If only the Stafford Sheriff change his position and allow dispatch routine traffic in the clear... Tom M sends

i gpt a psr-500 with the reg antenna...it happens from time to time...i live on 17 2 miles from 95...today engine 1 got called to spotsy for mutual aid and they had to switch over to the VA EMS Statewaide channel...i know this is getting off topic do you think spotsy will get a new system...i dont think stafford needs all these talkgroups they wont be used expand the area and let spotsy join the system...idk i think its just a waste of space that could be expanded..and Sheriff Jett will never change the encryption decision he made

I have no "inside information," but I tend to doubt that Spotsy will be switching to P25 from their analog EDACS anytime soon. They seem to have put a lot of money into the current system in the past couple of years. They built the Wilderness site. They upgraded many of the portables to digital-capable models (although the vast majority of the talkgroups remain analog).

But I agree, it would certainly make sense to get Spotsy (and Fredericksburg) on a 700 or 800 P25 system for interoperability. It wouldn't even have to be the same system--just a compatible system they could get programmed into each other's radios.
