June 6 at about 19:00L heard STAR 7 at the Muni(I think) either way they were calling into Link Center letting them know they were 'skids down'. Is that unit the GP helo? It is the first time I have heard it on the Edmonton repeater.

Ah ok, was not sure, it was the first time I have heard another helo other than STAR 3. Where is STAR 4 located?

Then safe to assume 1&2 are Calgary?

Yes you are correct. I am guessing but I think they are numbered like Air 1 in Edmonton is. When Air 2 is up it is still called Air 1. If a second copter is up it is Air 2 even if it's Air 1.

I believe Star 1 is the primary copter in Calgary with Star 2 secondary and the same in Edmonton for 3 and 4. I wonder if STAR 7 was in Edmonton heading out to it's base in Regina or Saskatoon.

I'm not sure, I was talking on my FT-8800, and when I TX the other side mutes, so I was not paying too much attention to it, I just heard the call sign and that they were skids-down but not sure where

I have been meaning to find this thread for a few days now - @STARSambulance posted a number of tweets earlier this week referencing STAR 7 as the Winnipeg-based machine.

Sweet thanks Jay! When is STARS starting service out that way?

kayn1n32008 - judging by the tweets, they are already working hard in that area. I believe I understood them earlier this spring that they were only there for flood season.

Harry - I have programmed that and the 458 freq into my department radio (receive-only, of course). I expect to try to hear them at the hangar on 458 (I believe it is only intended for operations around the hangar/base) and maybe I will pick them up on the 469 freq on the next call I run with them.

458

In April, while up at the Calgary Airport waiting for a plane to come in, I did hear STARS on this frequency. Have never heard them at any distance away from the airport. And I was on the north side of runway 34. As they don't make a lot of runs anymore in the City of Calgary, I have not heard them on 469.

It has been rumored that the STARS presence in Winnipeg and Saskatchewan is going to be made permanent.

I have been working out in the Drayton Valley area for the last couple of days and yesterday while driving north on Hwy 22 @ Sec Hwy 621 and juat a tad bit north of that intersection, I was at times hearing the Edmonton STARS Dispatch repeater at S-4 to S-5 on my FT-8800 using a larsen NMO 2/70 on a magmount. I was actually hearing it better than the VE6HM repeater and almost as good as the VE6PLP(Pigeon Lake) repeater. This was something that I was not expecting to be able to hear that far west. of Edmonton. not sure if it was some good propagation or if this would be a normal signal strength for this particular area. It would be interesting to model the coverage of the STARS repeater if we could find out the details of the system on Manulife (power, composite gain, and elevation) in Radio Mobile.

STARS Edmonton Coverage

Based on data from TAFL and your antenna setup it should be possible, in theory. :)

Just wait until VE6UV/MC is placed there. There might also be a 220 repeater going there as well.

Ya should be a great site. Probably need lots of filtering tho. should be interesting once UV goes there.
