I have a StarSoft question but it looks like the StarSoft forums are closed...I'm only seeing very old entries there.

I'm getting back into scanning and brought up my old StarSoft databases and updated with StarSoft Win500 V02.08, which seems to be the newest version. Registered it and set out to update my database entries with what's on RR for my area.

However, during the process (somehow) I lost some Win500 column headings. Specifically, on the TSYS Objects page, most column headings at the top of the Talkgroup table have gone missing. I'm now looking at blank column headings and must guess at what each column is. The only ones I can see are "Group or" "Delay" and "LED." The others are blank. My efforts to update my entries are therefore limited because I don't want to make changes when I don't know what the columns are.

Anyone know how to restore the column headings? I've tried several tricks that didn't work. Alternatively, anyone able to give me a list of what they are and I'll work from there without restoring them? Otherwise, the software seems to work fine and I'm gradually remembering how to use it. Thanks. Okay to DM me at N4TX@me.com

N4TX, why don't you un-install win500 completely, then do a re-install? I just re-installed a clean copy of my windows 10 on my harddrive, then re-installed win500, and have no issues.

I’m running Windows 10 v. 21H2. Might do a complete reinstall, but at the moment I printed out a screen capture from a WIN500 tutorial on RR and now know what the column headings are supposed to be. That lets me solve the immediate need.

i gather that WIN500 hasn’t been upgraded in a while. It’s been six or seven years since I’ve used it. Thanks.

Thanks. Sorry to hear that because it was an extremely useful product for us owners of older scanners. But he carried the flag for many years.

I’m not anywhere near my computer that has the WIN programs on it. If I remember correctly, there should be an option at the top somewhere to add columns.

edit

Try right clicking at the top of any column. See if that gives you options.

Don Starr, the author of WIN500, has totally abandoned his products, emails, forum posts, and customer support of any kind... going back several years now.
What happens now with unregistered software? The website is still up and you can download software. I just went to install Win92 and Win97 to reactivate my old Radio Shack units and it worked but I guess we're out of luck unless there's a warez solution?

Yes, the Starrsoft website is still up and you can download the software, but as far as purchasing registration keys to use the software beyond the 30 day trial period, or getting any kind of contact or support after sending your payment.... that would be a big gamble. You can search the forum for more info, there are quite a few posts and threads on that, Check this post:

Yeah... found that. I'm passing on this unless I find a crack. I know no one's gonna like that remark, but if the guy's not gonna respond, the hell with it and anything goes. I tried emailing because I had paid for Win97 and the desktop that it was in is long gone.

If someone has a software project that's gonna become abandonware, at least have the decency to announce that so you can get your backup affairs in order or fix it to provide a universal reg key if you're going out of business anyway, which, website or not, I'm assuming that he is.

Maybe the word Warez or Crack will get attention and he will surface here.

What a troublemaker, huh?

Or at least put a version on the site which is NO key, if you not going to deal with the public.

I ended up buying a clone of Win500 for the same reason, the Disappearing Don.

Did the O/P manage to fix his problem with the column headings in Win500? I've noticed the same thing on the CONV OBJECTS tab as well....looks like the Column heading box is too small to fit in the text. I'm running Win10 Pro 21H2

I remember playing with the column font sizes when I first went over to Win 10--I use these settings now, and they work well for me. User Interface is under the Configuration Tab:

Best row and column config for win10.jpg

Hope this helps restore your software functionality.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! That did it!

FWIW, I had no idea that setting was available and checked it against what WIN97 uses (22 col height, no fixed pitch, and 100 for FONT PITCH and it looks so much better!

Thanks again!
