I seem to receive Stars very well. However, I don't have dummy channels between sites. Should I and why?

Shouldn't be needed if you only have near by sites in bank. However, when ROAMing the area, the 96 may do better with a blank between each site.
Reason, scanner is better able to release a fading CC and shop for another.

I see you are right up the road from me. I am in Portsmouth, Churchland. I have a Home Patrol 1 that I just got and have the new State Police channels(STARS) but I am not hearing anything. Do you hear them ok. I am working off the stock antenna. Didn't know If I might need an outside antenna. I had a discone for many years with other scanners and didn't seem to do a lot for me than. Appreciate any help you could give me. My brother is a retired state trooper and he misses not hearing the state anymore. I told him about my HP1. He lives up near South hill area. Thanks in advance
