I tried messing with ADSB a year ago, was half way successful using a RTL Dongle. Its been so long I don't recall where to start anymore, using a PC, WIN 7.

I know the dongles work as I use one with an upconverter on HF frequently, so I'm that far.

So to the question, if you were starting over what would use today?

From my reading it sounds like I would use/need:

Dump 1090
planeplotter / Dump1090

Use this guide to get Dump 1090 working
PlanePlotter

Also would need Planeplotter
PlanePlotter from COAA

Does the above look to be the right track or should I look at something else?

Thanks

As a side note, I'm going to trim one the antenna that came with the dongels, if I can get it working I will look upgrading, the goal for now is just be able to see the planes flying over my head!

Jay, sounds like you're on the right track. I started out using RTL1090, a R820T and feeding PlanePlotter and FlightAware. Worked great for me but now I'm in the process of switching to a Raspberry PI, Dump1090, Piaware and hope to feed that to PlanePlotter and FlightAware also. Since it sounds like you're about where I was when I started last August, I suggest you visit the PlanePlotter forum and view all the "How to" videos you'll find there. Bev and his guys have put together some GREAT videos and help files. Also, there's tons of ADS-B info available at the YAHOO working group that's been a big help to me.
Anyway, join the crowd, expect to get your butt kicked with ALL the new tech stuff, and enjoy the successes. BTW, if you look at the live tracking on FlightAware, most everything you see flying in south Texas, south of San Antonio is from data forwarded from my site.
