I noticed that almost all the Spooner Post State Patrol squads got new, black antennas. I'm wondering if anyone knows who makes them and what's the model number on them.

Thanks!

If it is for WISCOM, the antenna is likely a Panorama wideband VHF 1/4 wave. Uses a funky European-style black-plastic roof mount with a 12mm hole. The whip looks a a stiff rubber duck with a black coil spring at the base. This is what was provided on most of the EFJ WISCOM installs. It actually is very broadbanded compared to a standard VHF 1/4 wave.

I bet you are right...the bases are very unique.

I have been wondering the same, and have been searching. I am thinking they are Sinclair excelsior models. (I have seen some on some local WSP Units and some EM vehicles - my guess is WISCOM related).
http://www.sinctech.com/pdf/excelsior_brochure_final.pdf are you talking about those that look like the 3rd one in this photo?

Yep, that's the one. Anyone know where I can order some?? What about a model number?? Particularly the first black one listed above?

sfd119...I think towertech is right...while the Sinclair looks similiar I do remember mention of the antennas being installed as being made in Germany (in which Panorama fits the bill).

They are made by Panorama, a London UK-based communications company. The antennas seen in this state were apparently custom-ordered by the State in anticipation of use on the WISCOM system. They are wideband, rated at ~138-165 MHz. The base is a funky plastic/plated metal contraption that requires a 1/2" hole for new installs, or it can be retrofit into existing 3/4" holes by flipping a rubber gasket around. The mount comes with a length of coax attached and they come with FME connectors already installed on the end of the coax.

You can see the two variations that the state radio shop is using in the photos below. The antenna on the right fender is on a swivel mount so it can be tilted vertical and it doesn't have the shock spring like the other 3 antennae do.

The new state vehicles (WSP, DNR, etc) have been getting them installed since summer last year, so they are starting to get around.

The new WEM command post has a gaggle of them on it's roof as well:

The company makes all sorts of antenna variations for use with VHF-low, VHF-high, TETRA, 800 MHz etc over in Europe. I don't think there are any commercial resellers in the US at this point.

I have a couple of them and can take detail photos if someone wants.

The Panorama antennas for WISCOM have been coming from Pointon Communications in Baraboo.
Pointon is a Panorama dealer (the ONLY one so far).

Those are one ugly antennas. I checked with a few of our distributors and nobody carries that Sinclair antenna line, I will keep looking.

We have started installing antennas from a company called EM Wave, they offer a rubber polymer in place of the spring. This allows for very little signal flutter from a quarterwave bouncing from the wind, yet durable enough to go through a drive through :)

And those aren't ugly? I like that they are tunable, but only a 15 MHz bandwidth on VHF won't get it done for WISCOM. Has there been any testing of these using digital emissions? One of the reasons that the Panorama antennas are being used is their digital performance was evaluated and deemed to be a good performer. Apparently antennas with loading coils, matching networks etc can have a negative impact on digital signals, so a coil-less wideband 1/4w antenna like the Panorama is preferred for use on a system like WISCOM.

Yes...radio shop stopped using an NMO mount CB antenna on the left rear fender when they started with the Panorama installs.

I do not, but it looks suspiciously like the Tram antennas that I've seen on eBay, etc.

I found this thread relating to the black antennas state patrol uses.

Since your last post, have you found a place where one could purchase this same antenna? Or is there another brand that looks very similar?

Thanks!
