Turnpike and Troop E Lingo
I.R.O.'s Incident Response Operators, (aka tow truck/flatbeds) Units
assigned to the Tunnels, (Sumner, Callahan, Ted Williams) as well as I-93N/S & I-90 to/from Route 1A and Exit 24 E/W. These units can tow, provide limited repair services but do not provide gas.
E.S.P.'s Emergency Service Patrols These units repair, provide gas, but
don't tow but have push bumpers to relocate disables in the travel lanes.
These units cover the "original" Turnpike for the NY line to Exit 24 E/W.

This should give you a better understanding of where things are. Some of
these "ramps" are very short and merge into other ramps. Signage for all of these designations are posted at the beginning of the ramps with a 0.0 mile maker designation. Additional signage is place on the walls of the ramps and tunnels.
Incorrect. The IROs are tow trucks or service units on the Mass Pike sections within the city of Boston. That includes the Ted Williams Tunnel, turnpike extension, and I-93 tunnels in Boston. I forget what the acronym stands for. The registered operated is indicated a the owner.
My guess is that they ask the dispatcher to run the plate or driver so that they can keep their eyes on them and not have to pay attention to the computer. Since MA troopers generally ride alone, their first priority is to make sure that they can address any potential threats.
