I reprogrammed my SDS200 last night and programmed RISCON as a single system (FL) and noticed the North Providence DPW appeared. I guess it's a matter of time before this zone gets populated. The signal is VERY strong. RSSI of -60! I must have a tower near me or something. I wonder why the state wants to use this zone for just RIPTA and DPW's? Those agencies are busy but it seems there would be room for some other entities.

It's likely that this statewide simulcast was built with fewer sites than the other simulcasts and so it provides statewide coverage on a mobile radio, but isn't as good as the other sites on a portable. So RIPTA, DPWs, and any other agencies that don't heavily use portable radios are good candidates to use this statewide site and will likely find the coverage good enough. Moving these users off of the 800MHz simulcasts frees up those sites to be used exclusively by agencies that do require portable radio coverage (especially Police and Fire deparments). With less users on the 800MHz simulcasts, there is less of a chance that all the frequencies will get used at the same time and someone will get a busy signal.

Excellent! Thank you...that clears it up. But what about those other state agencies that don't get much use, and who may use base radios? Like the scattered entities you find like EMA, Miscellaneous EMS, medical operations, etc?

I've asked a few RIPTA employees who are members of an online group that I'm involved with to kindly notify me if there is any upgrades in progress to the two-way radio communications system.
