I have pro96 and when I turn the volume knob I am getting static in volume as I increase the volume. This just started. Is there a way to fix this without sending it out for repair?

Antennas

A friend of mine has a pro 97 and I got a 396t and he heard my scanner and remarked about how his pro 97 has lots of static compared to the 396t. Maybe try a different antenna on the band you monitor. I got several antennas I use for different bands and it does help most of the time. I hardly use the stock antenna anymore.

The sound is clear until I either turn the volume knob clockwise or counter clockwise which seems to cause the static.

I have the Pro-95 and it does the same thing. I think the Pots just get dirty and start getting scratchy. The only two things that can be done are 1, clean the pot(s) with some cleaner and 2, replace them and start over for another X years... :) This is of course is if the scratchyness is when turning the controls like mine does. Not sure if this helps or just answers your question, but... For me, I just live with it and am not to worried about replacing the control to fix it, maybe someday? :)
Later...

Of course to clean them you would use a spray contact cleaner, something like DeoxIt, actually designed for this sort of application. Then just work the knob back and forth for a bit, and it should go away.

Its not a big deal!

Relax boys, it has happened to me. There is a simple solution and believe it or not Radio Shack has it.

Take off the knobs, spray a little into each pot ,then, turn it left and right while the radio is on like Chris said. Its safe. The spray comes with a little thin red straw that makes it easier to reach the pots. Unless you have a pot that is shot, ( no pun intended) this should work. I spray a little into my most used radios' pots once a month. Trust me this stuff works. Caution, use gloves or a towel of some kind, the spray is under high pressure and tends to be a little on the messy side.

Have fun!
