i have a radio that hear aviation frequencies but can't scan... so i'm wondering something really basic: what frequency will i hear the most aviation traffic in the STL area (which i assume will be mainly for/from lambert).

i assume this is something that can change because of wind and weather, but i'm hoping to be able to leave this radio on in my car and hear things as i drive around.

i have been monitoring what RR says is runway 12R/30, and sometimes it's picking things up, others not at all - and often i'm not close to Lambert, but... shouldn't i hear traffic coming from the planes in the air with their elevation etc?

i'm new to this, any tips would be great... if i would be better off listening to UNICOM or if there are better frequencies if i'm out in chesterfield or downtown by those airports, please let me know.

i've managed to listen to the ARCH helicopter UHF traffic on a scanner, not sure where PD or others land, but this is the radio i'm working with, hoping to get out of it what i can - thanks!

Best answers are to listen to everything, or scan the different bands. The info we have could be wrong. Check the frequencies on other websites. I don't get or understand listening to air traffic at all, so I can't help you. ARCH is on 461.525 and they'll talk with other helicopters on 123.025 on Helicopter Air-to-Air. (for landing at Barnes Hospital and other area hospitals) Keep track of what you hear on a notepad, etc. Cross-check the database. Also, CPS is just across the river from downtown, in Illinois (Cahokia), "St Louis Downtown Airport". This is where all the executives / sports teams, etc, fly in and out of. It's where many businesses and TV stations, etc have their aircraft.

Good luck!

Also, If you are interested, there are more medical helicopters in the area, not on the aircraft bands.

these i can scan, but i can't scan the aviation frequencies... i can only listen to one at a time. that's why i'm wondering which of those is the busiest.

Check Lambert Airport for departure or approach freqs. They will be the busiest and probably easiest to hear at least the planes.

Also depends on your distance from the airport. If you are only a few nautical miles away with a decent antenna, you might be able to hear both the tower (ATC) controllers and the pilots. Tower freqs: 118.5 and 120.05. There will be a lot of traffic on these because most approach/departure traffic patterns use runways 30R/L and 12R/L which are associated with those frequencies.. Since you cant scan, you will have to find out weather patterns and current routes/procedures they are using.
Here's a great link i found with loads of info on lambert..

enjoy!
