Just saw an ad on TV last night that an all new season of Storm Chasers returns on Weds, Oct 13th.

Ok so maybe someone can help me out; I am a fire fighter right, and when I arrive to the scene of a fire I don’t start spazing out and screaming like a girl because I assume that is why I was called in the first place.. Can someone explain to me when some and I say some of these guys get to what they are “chasing” they friggan flip a lid??? Let me say I live in NJ so I have only had minimum experience with severe weather but have the utmost respect for the people that do it, I just want to smack them sometimes and say chill the heck out.

It's adrenaline combined with the accomplishment of a goal combined with the nagging thought that you've just willingly placed yourself in the way of mortal danger.
Same reason extreme sports enthusiasts scream when they plummet off of a snowy peak or wave or cliff. That's certainly what they came there to do.
But nobody feels very comfortable with a firefighter who would do the same. It wouldn't instill confidence. Yet you still might feel a certain thrill when you arrive at a call, but you know it's best to keep it to yourself because you're a professional, dammit.

Thik of this way... You have driven several hundred miles after makig your best guess where to go in order to be in the neighborhood where the storms are expected, You have put up with bad food, bad roads, the call of nature, more bad food, more bad roads, your chase partners flatulance etc... To see what you have driven and suffered for is a great reason to shout with excitement (and relief).
It's adrenaline combined with a lack of scientific professionalism combined with television hype.
Many of these storm chasers claim to be interested in the science of severe weather, but their real goal seems to be capturing video or photos that they can sell for personal gain.
And the TV producers know that more excitement on screen translates to more viewers and bigger ratings.
A TV show about true scientists sitting along the side of the road studying computer weather models and scanning Doppler radar screens only to have yet another day of no severe weather would be quite boring.

I'm glad someone finally said it.
Honestly that's not TV hype... It's a lack of maturity at play. I can't think of the last time I jumped up and down and screamed like my daughter when getting a good storm. I've seen presentations by some of the greatest chase meteorologists alive and not one had to mute his audio or apologize for the stream of profanity coming.
It's just the way society is moving. I'll leave my best guesses as to why for another forum But the point is - it's not a requirement for chasing to act like an idiot.

Well thank you,, I knew sooner or later it would come out.. Like I said I come from a job with deep seated traditions and the world famous “we have done it for the last one hundred and fifty years so why change now” mentality and the famous officers we refer to as “old yeller” because of his lack of radio etiquette and leadership skills. So we all have them, I must say sitting in what looks to me to be a basic light armored striker while power lines and cracking like bull whips over my head and a F5 in front of me may raise my voice a little and drop a “F” bomb here and there!!! LOL good times ah, well those of you who do it thank you you crazy bastards. And people say I am nuts HAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Agreed. Im too busy setting up video and shooting pics withthe SLR to be carrying on like a redneck who just shot s big wild boar hog.

I loved it when he freaked out about the PHONE LINE that was going to zap him....
And the 'GAS LEAK EVERYBODY, Dont Breathe in!"
The guy exclaims that he cant believe that hes the first one there and he didnt think he would ever see anything like this... HELLO??? Dont you chase dangerous storms FOR A LIVING?!

They've gotten dumb since last season.
However, I still plan to watch. I will say that Reed's vehicle has to be the biggest JOKE I've ever seen. Ya, the TIV is generally a turd, but Reed's vehicle doesn't look like it could survive a strong car wash let alone a strong tornado.
As for the TIV crew, what happened to "Doghouse?" They went from an '08 Cummins Turbo Diesel Ram 4x4 to a crappy 97 Expedition with huge rims?
It looks like the new Twistex truck will tip right over in a strong gust. Who thought that one up?
I wonder which ones are ham operators. It seems like whenever the mobile radar data goes down they all take a dump in their pants and start driving in circles. Get on the radio and get some input. They've been doing this long before Internet.

The data part shocked me... Seeing them use the general public data server instead of paying $100/yr for AllisonHouse is just stupid. It's not like they are hurting for money. Even though Reed insisted he was the only chaser in the area, there were quite a few that day and the ones using AH kept getting data just fine.

Since they make the decision to go where the bear lurks, Dependable radar is a must. Do they have WxWorks Threatnet? Yeah, I know the Threatnet radar is at best a composite rendition that lacks the detail to show features in detail that help. When I started chasing w/ a friend who already had experience, we had to rely on Ham and the WX radio and our EYES. No Internet, just what was gleaned from TWC, local TV and radio. We had to use intuition, deductive reasoning and plain old luck
