During the past 2 months, I noticed on my r-s scanners that the bars are flexing with the att button on. This occurs on every vhf freq. I tuned, and tuned. No earthly explanation.. I know we have been nailed by solar storms, but this signal is new.. I just tuned the 935 range with same results.

I have seen some increased noise, particularly on low band VHF over the years that were likely attributable to an increase in solar noise but don't believe that is the case in this instance. I'd suspect a local wideband noise source(s) from such devices as CFL lamps, computer monitors, switching type power supplies, and etc. This is especially suspect if operating from an indoor antenna but have seen CFL's pollute the spectrum with enough wideband radiation that you can pick it up on an outdoor antenna system. Just a thought.

Let's go 1 more..
here's the set up....
R.s pro 197 has discone antenna.
uniden 15x has the ferret antenna..p
it's the pro 197 getting the vhf interference... Our d.o.t is low band. 47.340 pl 167.9.. It has always been horrid on the 197 while the 15x takes it perfectly.. Right after the vhf static showed up, reception of d.o.t switched scanners... Thats nuts... Now the 15x is horrid reception, and the 197 takes the signal fine... No equipment has been touched, or programmed... Trust me, this is a 1st...
on an ordinary note, the pro 197 takes 450--485 mhz as good as It ever did...
side note-- last summer, the brand new Berwick Maine repeater fried.. It sizzled like a steak for weeks... Ok, it's fixed, and now I am hearing the same sizzle on the Rochester n.h fire repeater. Also new....
Vhf - both...
Just a Sizzling time I guess
