Since the beginning of the 2008 Year County departments of Strathcona slowly migrated their existing VHF/UHF radios to the new multi-site county-wide LTR radio system. County EMS/Fire switched this month

As of last night most of the original conventional EMS/Fire UHF repeaters merged with the LTR system.

From what I can make of this new LTR system, it’s large and complex using some strange LTR Multi-point repeater zoned assignment…

Using decoding software I’m able to figure out channel orders, talk groups and radios ID’s but why. If I can’t monitor the system with my scanner or use a computer software assisted radio it’s pointless.

On this new system I have heard
• Fire
• EMS
• Bylaw (photo radar….)
• Transit
• Parks and Rec
• Roadways
• Patch to Fort Saskatchew, Riley.......
• Building inspectors
• Drainage
• RCMP (supervisor on portable)

To continue mutual aid support (dispatch) to surrounding communities as Fort Saskatchewan and Riley…. Some sort of radio gateway was installed to maintain inoperability with conventional repeaters.

OK so I am lost. Can this new system be monitored with a Uniden or a GRE unit? Or are you saying that currently it cannot be monitored.

Yeah, but omrail, the thing is brechtd said there is some kind of unusual stuff going on with the system.

I'm a little unsure what "LTR Multi-point repeater zoned assignment" means.

will that is why the quote "there's a lot about the Edmonton area that is known only to Edmontonian scanner hobbyists" is correct

A bigger question, where are the rest of the Edmonton area guys or gals.

I can't be the only person in Edmonton noticed something was up with the Strathcona systems months ago.

Now I made it known changes have taken place in Strathcona county, do some of your own homework.
Unless we can montior this system with a scanner what is the point of me publishing maps with zones, talkgroups, radios IDs...

I'm pretty sure the system is a Motorola Passport multi-site system with a twist, zoned.

Strathcona system

From what I can make of the whole mess, its a hybrid LTR Passport and Standard trunked radio system. Some talkgroups are simulcast to all 3 zones, areas or sites. Heartland Hall is Passport only site the two remaining sites are hybrid.

brechtd have a question for you or any one that can Answer. I was working out in the Strathcona county area on the weekend and was scanning the Strathcona on my drive in and out.

I found that fire was still on the old system. Have you been finding this as will?

It may sound like things are status quo, but I am pretty sure old Channel one and two is part of the LTR system. Channels 3 and 4 remain conventional UHF channels. Today I seen and caught on close call a Strathcona county ambulance booking off on the Nuns on channel 4. I did take a peek at the radio, noticed the radio Alfa tag as Ch. 4 with NO trunk affliation.

It may appear things are status quo as old Channel one frequency is new Fire/EMS LTR channel one home slot. Ch two frequency is new Fire/EMS LTR channel two home slot. Channel 3 and 4 are still remain conventional, no change. Channel 5,6,7 are LTR channels 8,9 and possible 10 are simplex.

LTR Ch. 1 and 2 are simlucast too all LTR sites, (See RR database for information) Channels 5,6,7 only to east tower. LTR channel 1,2,5,6,7 are allowed to roam to all sites.

A simple way to tell if a radio frequency is LTR, listen closely with your radio un-squelched, in this case on the "old" channel one and two you can detect the key click every 3 seconds. If you were to run any of the LTR decoding software on any of these two frequencies you will see LTR passport and standard data packets.

The LTR decoding software out thier is just ok at the best. I'm doing my best to sort it out with the tools I have. I am hoping when the system is actually complete. I will tap my sources for the real and complete story.
