This may have been suggested before, but has there ever been consideration of adding cruise ships as an entry in the topic specific forum area? Every once in a while I see someone either requesting cruise ship frequencies or providing some froma cruise they were on.

I know the Miami-Dade Florida DB listed some Carnival ship frequencies, but after a trip to Miami (including a boat tour of the cruise ship docking area) I helped update this information. As it turns out none of the ships listed in the DB sail out of Miami.

For those going on cruises I am sure listening in to the various communications are interesting. I know I would take my scanner if I was going on a cruise.

So just a suggestion and my apologies if this has been discussed before.

Folks usually post either in the STATE where the ship will be leaving or the Marine Forum, when looking for the info.

Many of us respond, as well as providing the person with What other ships you might find while in port.
Since it's "Every Once and a While" it doesn't need its own forum

To the OP, have you looked at my web page ?

What's wrong with using the Marine forum?

best regards..Mike

You answered your own question. There isn't enough discussion to warrant its own forum.

ka3jjz. You ask why not the marine forum? The marine forum is related to marine communications and I take that as primarily those communications on the vhf marine band. Marine radio is a two way communication process. Cruise ships would be a listening only process.

Bill, the problem with posting in the state where the cruise originates will not yield much information from the DB. For example FL has 5 major cruise ship ports, but I don't see much in the FL forum. And the problem with cruise ships is a ship might leave from Miami for 3 months and then shift to New Orleans. So why not consolidate it in one place? Yes I took a look at your web page. It is very good, but there are gaps. For example I did not see Norwegian Epic. I saw some ship listed as LTR so you would need all the trunking freqs. If I was to go on a cruise today I would use the information you have and try to supplement it for you if I discovered anything else.

Joey C, just becuase I have only seen a few people asking doesn't mean the demand isn't there. Plus I bet all of the topic specific forums started out slow. For example Railroad listening probably has less people than public service listening. And Radio finding is very limited, but it has its own forum.

I'm just saying that having everything in one place would be nice. A cruise ship forum would allow people to ask in a forum specific to their requests and not get lost in a larger forum like the marine forum. It would allow people to report their findings to share with others.

So why not try it and see what happens? If it doesn't take off due to a lack of interest it can be closed and the posts moved to the marine forum or somewhere else.

I'm sorry but there is not enough demand for this topic. As has been mentioned, the Marine forum would be the best.

If we added forums for reasons just to try topics we would have a humongous list of forums. Some people can not even handle what we do have.

The issue with the doing this in any state forum is that the frequencies are specific to a ship, not a port. The cruise lines move the ships from port to port quite often as demand changes, to reflect the seasonality of port destinations, or simply to give folks that regularly sail out of a specific port another ship to travel on. For a ship that sails out of Seattle for cruises to Alaska where would you list them, Washington or Alaska? What would you do when that ship moves to LA for cruises to warmer destinations during the harsh winter season in Alaska? Based on this, I agree that the Marine forum is probably the best location for them until use indicates a move to their own forum would be prudent.

??? Marine is a listen only too, unless you have a Marine Radio on your boat, it's not Two-Way. 98% of the message forums here are about listening, not talking on a radio.

PS it's not just Cruise Ships - remember Cargo [Bulk, Fuel etc] also use those UHF Channels.

The reason they post in the PORT of Departure state, is we ASSUME [which can be a BAD Thing] that folks in the area will chime in and post back CURRENT information [vs the much outdated Carnival LTR] and also provide helpful info on the area [things to do, see, eat, drink, meet-up] to do before/after the Cruise.

Things like where to park and Watch the ships arrive/leave w/o being bothered by the Local Constabulary etc.

It's a toss up as to where folks post, but alas there is not enough traffic on the topic [3-4 posts for 1-2 mo's at a time] and my comments also include messages sent personally to me vs the boards.

There will always be gaps. Bad info submitted is one reason. It's amazing where folks will cut-n-paste OLD out-dated data and submit as current.

Learning the channel plans, takes time [months], some channels change weekly, others by PORT [Season].

It doesn't take going on a Cruise to find many of the Frequencies, but many folks won't spend time [just like Searching for FEDS]

Cruise Season in Boston starts in April [thru the end of Oct] and just sitting near the port for Arrival/Departures provides much info.

I have a road trip to Miami next month and plan on encountering 20+ ships between Miami and Lauderdale for updates

The EPIC is not there, because No One has submitted any Info.

Most LTR systems don't require ALL of the Frequencies.
Users are typically assigned a Home Channel, and ONLY if it's busy get moved to the next Frequency. Program it with No PL

We have a few Special LTRS here in Boston, that provide no LCN when they transmit [for Scanners] so program without PL and you can still listen. Just not Track, if they change channels.

Good discussion here, but like folks have said, NOT Enough traffic to warrant it's own Forum. Use the Marine Forum or the State for the PORT of Departure/Arrival ;)

Thanks for all the replies. Maybe someday there will be enough interest for this to get its own forum. As I stated before, Bill, I will check your page for any future cruises I might take. Hopefully scanner owners who go on cruises will contribute more including those ships that have nothing listed such as the Epic. Thanks again for all the replies.
