Uniden scanners skipping encryption on SCANNING is indeed a good thing. It does allow scanning to "move on" and hear other monitorable traffic. However, skipping encryption on SEARCHING is NOT a good thing. Uniden would serve the searching community better by allowing all Intel to be captured during search. And they would really enhance searching if they offered an option to bypass any analog signals without coded squelch. Of course all access codes and ID numbers need to be displayed and recordable.
Whistler is the only game in town to search encrypted traffic for Intel gathering, but hangs on encrypted traffic while scanning. Could it be patent issues limiting the obvious preferred operation? Maybe. So I search with Whistler scanners, and scan with Uniden scanners. If pattents are in the way of progress, I do wish both brands would settle on a trade agreement to make both better at searching and scanning.
